Site-based Professional Development

Site-based professional development usually takes place at a school site and is designed to address schoolwide goals that impact the whole staff (Fogarty & Pete, 2017). This model works best when leadership facilitates goal setting, obtains buy-in by stakeholders, and builds a community of learners (Fogarty & Pete, 2017).

1. How is the model effective in creating PD for adult learners Since adult learners are driven by problem-focused learning (Anders, 2023), this professional development is effective because it allows them to take part in working together with other adults to come up with solutions that benefit all staff and students. 2. Advantages and Disadvantages: This professional development benefits the school site, staff, and students by strengthening and supporting the school improvement initiative (SEDL & American Institutes for Research, 2024). According to Fogarty & Pete (2017), a drawback to this model is funding since most schools have a small budget. 3. Activities: professional development for schoolwide behavior management

Districtwide Professional Development

The districtwide professional development model is referred as the "spray paint method" according to Fogarty & Pete (2017). It is a way of introducing the entire faculty to an innovation. It is usually involves multiple days of professional development.

1. How is the model effective in creating PD for adult learners: This model of professional development provides ongoing support to help adult learners work cooperatively to increase student achievement (Fogarty & Pete, 2017). This allows time for adult learners to review, and reflect on new and existing teaching practices to benefit their students. 2. Advantages and Disadvantages: An advantage of this model is it is an ongoing and continuous PD that involves input from all stakeholders to help increase student achievement. A disadvantage is there may not be sufficient training for full implementation without the practice and coaching elements (Fogarty & Pete, 2017). 3. Activity: unpacking a new curriculum, improving instructional methods

Individualized Professional Learning Plan

This model of professional development involves staff members to plot a course of professional development opportunities. According to Fogarty & Pete (2017), this model can be customized to the wants and needs of the individual as they work to determine an appropriate career path.

1. How is the model effective in creating PD for adult learners: According to Anders (2023), adult learners are self-directed and want learning opportunities that build upon their experiences as teachers. This PD allows them to take charge of the learning process and make necessary changes for their schools and students. 2. Advantages and Disadvantages: An advantage that this model of professional development provides is the opportunity for adult learners to plot a plan for professional growth that is tailored to their needs and strengths. 3. Activity: traditional workshop, graduate course work, mentoring, research in the classroom

Teams/Communities of Learners

Teams/communities of learners is a model of professional development that focuses on group collaboration. It involves a team of educators who come together to analyze, discuss, and reflect on instructional practices that can help improve student performance (Fogarty & Pete, 2023).

1. How is the model effective in creating PD for adult learners: According to Anders (2023), adult learners work best when they are allowed to take responsibility for their own learning. This model allows teachers to collaborate and explore ways to support and improve their instructional practices and increase their professional growth (Indeed, 2022). 2. Advantages and Disadvantages: This model provides purposeful and relevant learning opportunities that are key to lasting change in the schools (Fogarty & Pete, 2023). A disadvantage is it relies heavily on team collaboration and requires the buy-in of all members. 3. Activity: Data discussion, book studies, debriefing, instructional interventions

Online/Remote Professional Development

Online/remote professional development has become increasingly popular thanks to the versatility of today's technology. According to Fogarty & Pete (2017), despite the presenter being online, participants can connect with the presenter remotely rather than traveling to the site in person.

1. How is the model effective in creating PD for adult learners: This model of professional development provides an opportunity for staff to receive PD at the convenience of their own home (Fogarty & Pete, 2017). 2. Advantages and Disadvantages: This model allows the entire staff to connect and collaborate with the presenter at their convenience without restricting time constraints and travel costs (Fogarty & Pete, 2017). A disadvantage to this model of PD is participants can freely log on or out at their discretion making it difficult to expect 100% participation. 3. Activity: online training, workshop/webinar
