Introduction
An observed low-pressure area tracking westward has intensified into a typhoon. The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA) released a forecast for typhoon Haiyan, locally named as typhoon Yolanda. The projected landfall headed for November 5, 2013.

The issued forecast predicts strong winds and storm surges reaching 7 meters high. Rapidly developing from a low-pressure area to tropical depression and into typhoon, prior to landfall in the Philippines, the Hongkong Observatory stated the typhoon’s maximum ten-minute sustained winds at 285 km/h (175 mph).
