Active Learning
Rationale and Strategies
What does active learning mean to you? Turn and talk with a tablemate.
In Elementary Education we say Activity before Concept (ABC)
Why Active Learning?
- Students are doing the cognitive work
- Helps make thinking explicit
- Encourages making connections
- Helps correct misconceptions sooner
Research says:
Incorporating active learning strategies into university courses significantly enhances student learning experiences Active learning leads to increases in examination performance that would raise average grades by a half a letter, and exam failure rates under traditional lecturing were 55% higher than the rates observed under active learning (Freeman et al., 2014; Theobald et al., 2020).
