TUPAC SHAKUR’S BIOGRAPHY
TUPAC'S ORIGINS
Tupac Amaru Shakur was born on June 16, 1971, in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City. His mother, Afeni Shakur, had been a political activist and member of the Black Panther Party who was arrested in 1969 on charges of planning coordinated attacks on police stations and offices in New York City. She became pregnant by Tupac while out on bail and was acquitted in 1971 after defending herself in court.
TUPAC'S NAME
When Tupac was 1 year old, Afeni changed his name to Tupac Amaru in honor of a Peruvian revolutionary killed by the Spanish. He said of the name: “I wanted it to be named after revolutionary indigenous peoples around the world. I wanted him to know that he was part of a global culture and not just a neighborhood”.Tupac later took the surname from his sister Sekyiwa father, another Black Panther named Mutulu Shakur. Tupac also had a half-brother, Mopreme.
