IS ANIMAL FARM SIMILAR?

WHY IS IT A DYSTOPIA?& WHAT IS MISSING?

VIOLENCE: Mafias steal time and use violent methods (threatening, killing...)If mafias didn´t exist, there would be more liberty . SOCIAL GROUPS: Your time defines your status, the less time you have left, the poorer you are. And as the status increases, so are the zones. (zone 12 is for the poor and zone 2 is for the rich). The time you have left leads your life. LANDSCAPE: As the zones become increasingly low, buildings, roads, houses, bridges and nature start degrading as there is no time to take care of those. POLITICS: Corrupt world, the rich thrive with the loss of the poor. Unstable buying tasses for the poor in order to maintain the rich one's economies. POVERTY: Lack of time means poverty, some people live not knowing if at the end of the day, they will die or continue

WHY IS IT A DYSTOPIA?& WHAT IS MISSING?

While the movie displays a society with significant government control, it doesn't fully showcase a totalitarian regime. The movie doesn't emphasize on the manipulation of history and cultural identities, which are common in dystopian societies. The movie doesn't display extreme forms of punishment or oppression when breaking the rules, these are common in dystopian societies.

GOVERNMENT CONTROL: Authoritarian regime Huge wealth inequality CONSEQUENCES: Everything enforced by laws Serious consequences for rule-breakers FEAR AND ANXIETY Constantly watching clocks Worrying about survival STRATIFIED SOCIETY Clear distinction between rich and poor Economic disparity leads to social unrest SURVIVAL MOTIVATION: Desperation to avoid "timing out" and death

IN TIME V.S. ANIMAL FARM

TOPICS: Both talk about power and control within a society. Animal Farm displays corruption of power through a revolution, while In Time displays social inequality and class division, if there were not any revolution, the inequality would have killed the low social classes. OPRESSION AND REBELLION: Both involve a rebellion against oppressive systems. In Animal Farm, Mr Jones made animals create their rebellion, in which they overthrew him, only to find themselves being opressed by a corrupted socialism. Similarly, in In Time, there is a rebellion against the unfair capitalist system that led to its collapse. MANIPULATION: Both involve characters who manipulate others for personal gain. In Animal Farm, Napoleon and other pigs made the other animals act for their own benefit. In In Time, the wealthy communities manipulate and exploit the poor population. CRITIQUE: Both critique their respective governing systems. Animal Farm criticizes the corruption in socialism (animalism) while In Time criticizes a society where capitalism has been taken to an extreme which led to extreme poverty and injustice.

SUMMARY

In Time is a movie created by Andrew Niccol in 2011 based on a futuristic dystopic context, in which humanity has discovered a formula against aging since 25 years old, the discovery of the anti-aging formula led time to become the new currency in the world. This presented a huge gap and created social classes divided into sectors where the poorest people didn't know if they were going to survive throughout the day or not. In this context, the protagonist, Will Salas, is a 26-year-old man who works in a factory doing routine tasks. On a particular day, he receives a huge amount of time which makes him incredibly rich, but he faces difficulties in which he questions the purpose of living in the same system of social injustice where many people must die for a few to live. Taking this into account, for a sudden coincidence he interacts with the daughter of the richest man with the biggest amount of time. Will and Sylvia (The daughter) work together in order to abolish the system and provide equality to everyone
