Using an author's exact words without quotation marks and/or a citation is called plagiarism. When you paraphrase, you are taking someone's ideas and putting them in your own words. It's important to give the original author credit for those ideas! When you paraphrase you must restate the author's ideas in completely different words and in a different sentence structure.
