WETLAND and Mangroove destruction

By Sathvik Yechuri

What are they?

Mangrooves

a group of trees or shrub thats grow in chiefly tropical coastal swamps that are flooded at high tide. Mangroves typically have numerous tangled roots above ground and form dense thickets.

Wetlands

areas where water covers the soil, or is present either at or near the surface of the soil all year or for varying periods of time during the year, including during the growing season.

Why are they important?

Benefits:

  1. Natural buffer zones agains storms, tsunamis, and erosion.
  2. High rates of biodiversity
  3. High rates ofcarbon sequestration
  4. Regulate flooding
  5. Natural filters for the water bodies they grow in

Human Impact on these ecosystems

Unsustainable Harvesting

Deforestation & Urbanization

Pollution

The natural order of an ecosystem is carefully balanced among its organisms. However, intoduction of human activity greatly influences the organims in the region, creating a domino effect of consequences that affect a vide range of species.

With urbanization and development of devices that consume fuels like coal, pollution plays a huge part in hurting these ecosystems. And humans are comntinuing to do so with further development technology and immense consumption of energy.

With the rapidly developing technology and infrastrucutre, natural land is cleared and converted to urban hotspots. This process includes the Mangroove and Wetland ecosystems.

Conservation Methods

Creating Reserves

Habitat Restoration

Community-Based Conservation

Sustainable Resource Management

Activly restoring degraded ecosystmes to their original, natural state.

Establishing protected areas such as national parks and wildlife sanctuaries.

Encourage local communities towards conservation of these ecosystems.

Adopting practices that balance human needs with the conservation of natural resources
