What is it ?

Definition

Assisted human procreation is a set of medical techniques that can be suggested to a couple who undergoes difficulties in triggering a pregnacy or who cannot have a child or to an unmarried woman who wants to have a child.

The different methods

1: Artificial insemination

2: In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

3: Embryo reception

Already seen or will be seen soon.

The In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

The cases and possibilities

IVF refers to the fusion of an egg and a sperm outside the woman’s body in the laboratory. The fertilized ovum or egg is then allowed to grow for some time in a special culture medium. A medium is the environnement where the embryo develop during the first days before being implanted in the womb of the woman who is to undergo the pregnancy.

How does it really work ??

How does it really work ??

Step 1 :

Hyperstimulation of the ovaries is achieved to allow the release of more than one ovum. This is also called superovulation.

Step 2 :

Egg retrieval is achieved by aspiration of the follicle, to remove the ova from the body (at this step, if the woman cannot produce any eggs, donor oocytes may be used).

Step 3 and 4 :

Insemination and fertilization. During these steps, the male partner’s sperm is mixed with the ‘best’ of the retrieved eggs, to encourage fertilization under controlled conditions. This is usually done within a few hours however; alternate procedures may be used at this stage if the doctor feels that unassisted fertilization is highly unlikely, or, even in some modern settings.

Step 5 :

Embryo culture is implemented when the ovum is fertilized. It allows the embryo to divide into several cells - this phase usually lasts about five days. Within this period, preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) may be performed, especially if either partner has a high risk of transmitting a genetic condition to the child. It happens about three or four days after the fertilization and requires a single cell to be removed from each embryo. However, this is not done in all cases because of the controversy. As it's a selection of the best cells which doesn't have any mutation or chromosomes abnormalities, it can create drifts and discrimations about some characteristics.

Step 6 :

Embryo transfer into the womb is carried out within three to five days after fertilization. It must implant into the endometrium to become a pregnancy. In most cases, multiple embryos will be implanted to increase the chances of successful conception, that's increase also the probablities to have twins. Embryos left over are frozen and implanted for use at a later time, or donated for the use of others.

The cases and possibilities :

In most of the cases, the IVF is performed when the uterine tubes are blocked.

But let's see other possibilities !

The cases and possibilities

The different fertilization possibilities :

  • With the woman's egg and the donor semen
  • With the semen of the spouse and a frozen egg from a donor anonymous
  • In some cases, with donor sperm and donor egg
The operation is suggested in the following cases:
  • Risk of transmission of a genetic disease to the child
  • Infertility in any member of the couple
  • For a single woman
