for as long as we live on earth. But that doesn’t mean the sin nature has to control us. That doesn’t mean we have to be slaves to sin, misery, and the schemes of Satan.

Even once we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ,
GOD IS STILL IN CHARGE!
He wants us to use this time to grow up and glorify Him, so He provides the power to do just that. It’s the greatest power in all of heaven and earth, and He gives it to us the moment we believe in Jesus Christ.
THE INSTANT YOU WERE SAVED,
God the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, indwelt you. He made your body His residence—His dwelling place—so that you could use His power to accomplish the Father’s will for your life.
THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE "HELPER"
that Jesus Christ promised would come once He died and went to heaven. Jesus promised that this Helper will “be with you forever” (John 14:16). The Holy Spirit indwells you forever. You can never lose Him—regardless of how much or how many times you fail in the spiritual life.
WILL YOU USE HIS POWER OR NOT?

If the Holy Spirit lives inside believers—indwells us—then why does the Bible command us to “be filled with Spirit” (Eph. 5:18)?
THINK ABOUT IT THIS WAY:
If someone hands you the latest generation smartphone and says, “It’s yours to keep,” it will not work unless you press the button to power it on. If you don’t give that wonderful device electricity, it has no power to help you text friends or listen to favorite tunes.
Well, the Holy Spirit indwelling us is a lot like that. He’s there, perfectly capable of helping with everything, but we choose to turn His power on or off.
When He’s on, His power overrules the sin nature. The Holy Spirit is in charge of your soul and helps you live God’s way.
When He’s off, the sin nature gets to control your soul. You ignore God’s plan and concentrate instead on your own desires.
You turn the Holy Spirit ON or OFF simply by use of your own volition.
If you choose to go against God’s standards—if you sin—you turn the Holy Spirit off. But if you choose to rebound—name your sins to God the Father—the Holy Spirit’s power comes right back on.
When His power is on, you are filled with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit controls your soul.
When His power is off, you are not filled with the Holy Spirit. He cannot help you because you’ve let the sin nature control your soul.
This is why the Bible tells us, “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh” (Gal. 5:16). If you "walk by the Spirit," then you are filled with the Spirit. If the Spirit is in control of your soul, “you will not carry out the desire of the flesh [sin nature].”
The Bible also confirms that “those who are in the flesh [sin nature] cannot please God” (Rom. 8:8).When we’re “in the flesh,” the sin nature controls our soul. We’re operating on our own power. We might do many things that impress other people, but we are still useless to God.

The Holy Spirit empowers us
to do the Father’s will, to live out Hisperfect plan for our lives, day by day.
Unless we’re filled with the Spirit—in fellowship with God, no unconfessed sin in our lives—we cannot resist temptations of the sin nature. We cannot learn and apply Bible doctrine, produce divine good works (works that are acceptable to God), share the Gospel, or pray effectively. In other words,
without the filling of the Spirit, we cannot glorify our Lord and Savior on earth.
