General information

Australia, which is one of the largest countries in the world, represents approximately 85 percent of the continent of Oceania and is located between the Pacific and the Indian oceans.
With approximately 26 million inhabitants, Australia represents more than half of the population of Oceania. Its capital city, Canberra, is not the largest Australian city, as it is Sydney. The country is often referred to as "the Oldest Continent," "the Last Land" or "the Last Frontier." In Australia, people use the Australian Dollar. Australia's national anthem is called "Advance Australia Fair."

Geography

History

Aboriginal and Islander peoples are the first inhabitants of Australia and they have lived on the continent for more than 60,000 years! In 1770, Captain James Cook, who was a British explorer, arrived in southeastern Australia and he thought it was a good place to start a colony. There were too many criminals in England's prisons, so the English government decided to send prisoners in Australia to live there. The first colony emerged in 1788. In the 1850s, people discovered gold and consequently, thousands of new immigrants immigrated to Australia (from Europe, the USA, New Zealand...). In 1901, Australia became independent and because of the White Australia policy, it was very hard for non-European people to immigrate to Australia. The policy changed in 1973 and many Asian immigrants arrived. Today, more than 90 percent of Australian people have European origins.

Now, take the test!

Australia is situated in the Southern hemisphere. It is a country and an island. It is also part of the continent of Oceania. Australia is divided into seven parts (six states and one territory): Queensland (North East), New South Wales (South East), South Australia, Victoria (South of New South Wales), Western Australia, Tasmania (an island in the South) and the Northern Territory. In Australia, there are 26 million inhabitants who mainly live in big cities, such as Melbourne (the biggest city in Victoria), Perth (which is located in Western Australia), Brisbane (which is located in Queensland, on the coast), Sydney (on the east coast) and Canberra (which is the capital city of Australia and located between Sydney and Melbourne). A vast part of the country is covered with deserts, where few people live. This part is called "the Outback."
