This lesson will help you learn more about the brain and nervous system. In the future, as we study the other parts of the body, we will keep learning about the brain and nervous system and see how they work with the body.

PARTS OF THE BRAIN

CEREBRUM

CEREBELLUM

BRAINSTEM

The three main parts of the brain are the (seh-ree-brum) cerebrum, (seh-ruh-bel-lum) cerebellum, and brainstem.

BRAINSTEM

The ______________ is the biggest part of the brain. This part of the brain handles all the things that go on in your mind and body.
The cerebrum has four lobes: the frontal lobe, the (puh-rye-uh-tuhl) parietal lobe, the (ok-sih-puh-tuhl) occipital lobe, and the (tem-puh-ruh) temporal lobe. The cerebrum is divided down the middle into a left (hem-is-feer) hemisphere and a right hemisphere.

The (kor-pus) corpus (kal-oh-sum) callosum connects the right and left sides of the brain so the whole brain works together. The left side of the brain controls the _____ side of the body. The right side of the brain controls the ______ side of the body.

THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

12

The human nervous system has two parts: the central nervous system and the (peh-ri-feh-ruhl) peripheral nervous system.

13

The central nervous system is made up of the brain and spinal cord. This system controls everything that happens in your body.

14

The brain is the main organ of the central nervous system and the most important organ in the body. No part of the body can do its job without the brain.

15

The spinal cord is an important part of the central nervous system. It sends signals back and forth between your brain and the rest of your body. Your backbone protects your spinal cord.

17

The (peh-ri-feh-ruhl) peripheral nervous system connects the brain and spinal cord to your body and the world around you.

18

(Kray-nee-ul) Cranial nerves come out of the brain. They are called cranial nerves because they are in the part of the skull called the (kray-nee-um) cranium. You have 12 pairs of cranial nerves.

19

Spinal nerves come off the spinal cord. These nerves control your body from your neck down to your toes. You have 31 pairs of spinal nerves.

20

The (peh-ri-feh-ruhl) peripheral nervous system has two parts: the (so-mah-tik) somatic nervous system and the (aw-toe-nuh-mik) autonomic nervous system.

21

The (so-mah-tik) somatic nervous system controls your senses of touch, sound, taste, and smell. This system also controls movements you can control. These are called voluntary movements.

22

The (aw-toe-nuh-mik) autonomic nervous system controls involuntary movement. You cannot control involuntary movement.

23

There are two parts to the (aw-toe-nuh-mik) autonomic nervous system: the (sim-puh-theh-tik) sympathetic nervous system and the (peh-ruh-sim-puh-theh-tik) parasympathetic nervous system.

24

The (sim-puh-theh-tik) sympathetic nervous system becomes active whenever you feel scared or stressed. This system is called the "fight or flight" system.

25

The (peh-ruh-sim-puh-theh-tik) parasympathetic nervous system restores your body to normal. This system is called the "rest and digest" system. It calms the body down after a "fight or flight" event.
