What are chemical bonds?
What types of links are there?
There are three main types of chemical bonding: ionic, covalent, and metallic.
Metal bonds are formed by the attraction between metal ions and delocalized or "free" electrons.
Ionic bonds are formed by the transfer of an electron from one atom to another.
In covalent bonds, electrons are shared between two atoms.
Ionic bonds
Welco me 6th gradrs!
Covalent bonds:
- Covalent bonds occur when atoms SHARE one or more valence electrons. Many simple covalent compounds are present in daily life. For example, water (H2O), oxygen (O2), and carbon dioxide (CO2) are covalent compounds.

Some examples of covalently bonded compounds:
- Benzene (C6H6)
- Methane (CH4)
- Glucose (C6H12O6)
- Ammonia (NH3)
- Freon (CFC)
- In all forms of carbon (C): carbon, diamonds, graphene, etc.
Some examples of ion-bonded compounds:
- Magnesium oxide (MgO)
- Copper sulfate (CuSO4)
- Potassium iodide (KI)
- Manganese chloride (MnCl2)
- Calcium carbonate (CaCO3)
- Iron sulfide (Fe2S3)
