12 сәуір – Адамзаттың ғарышты бағындырған күні. Сондықтан, 1968 жылдан бастап Халықаралық авиация федерациясы бұл күнді Дүниежүзілік авиация және космонавтика күні деп бекітті. Ал Біріккен Ұлттар Ұйымының Бас ассамблеясы Адамның ғарышқа ұшуының халықаралық күні деп жариялады. Ғарышкерлерді дайындау ісі бұрынғы КСРО-да 1960 жылы, ал АҚШ-та 1959 жылы және 1962 жылы жүргізіле басталды. Тұңғыш ғарышкер Юрий Гагариннен (1961) бастап ғарышқа төрт жүзден астам адам ұшқан. Олардың ішінде қазақ ғарышкерлері Тоқтар Әубәкіров, Талғат Мұсабаев, Айдын Айымбетов бар.

Юрий Алексеевич Гагарин 1934 жылы 9 наурызда КСРО-ның батыс аймағындағы қазіргі Гагарин ауданының Клушино ауылында дәулетті шаруаның отбасында дүниеге келген.1961 жылы 12 сәуірде Мәскеу уақыты бойынша сағат 09: 07-де «Байқоңыр» ғарыш айлағынан көптен күткен ұшу орындалды. Гагарин зымыран көтерілер алдында: «Кеттік!» – деп айқайлады. (Гагариннің ұшуына байланысты Байқоңыр деп қойылған)

1991 жылдың сәуір айында ғарышкер Кеңес Одағы Ғарышкерлер даярлау орталығында ғарышқа ұшу дайындығына кірісіп, сол жылы 2 қазанда Байқоңырдан "Союз ТМ-13" кемесімен ғарышқа ұшқан. Тоқтар Әубәкіров онда Арал аймағы бойынша ғылыми-зерттеу жұмыстарын жасап, биотехнология, металлургия, медицина салаларына қатысты зерттеу жүргізді. Ғарышкер орбитада 7 күн 22 сағат 12 минут болып, 10 қазанда Жерге оралды.
Талғат Аманкелдіұлы Мұсабаев
1994 жылдың 1 шілдесі қазақ елі үшін тарихи күн болды. «Байқоңыр» ғарыш айлағынан «Союз ТМ-19» ғарыш кемесі мен «Мир» орбиталық кешенінде Талғат Мұсабаев экипаждың бортинженері ретінде алғашқы ғарыштық сапарына аттанады. Ол ашық ғарышқа екі рет шығып, жалпы алғанда 11 сағат 07 минут өткізеді. Ал ғарышта жалпы 126 тәулік болады.

Қазақтың үшінші, Тәуелсіз еліміздің бірінші ғарышкері 2015 жылғы 2 қыркүйекте «Союз ТМА-18М» ғарыш кемесінде командир Сергей Волков пен 1-бортинженер Андреас Могенсенмен брге көкке көтерілді. Экипаж Жерге 12 қыркүйекте 9 күн 20 сағат 13 минут 51 секундтан кейін оралды.
