The Commonwealth
Start
The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 54 independent and equal countries all over the world (in Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe and the Pacific).
Its roots go back to the British Empire, when countries around the world were ruled by Britain. This is the reason why English is the common language.
The Commonwealth is home to one-third of the world's population and includes both advanced economies and developing countries.
How the Commonwealth was formed
The Commonwealth of Nations was born out of the slow disintegration of the British Empire, which covered a fifth of the world’s surface in the late 19th century.
Over the years different countries of the British Empire gained different levels of freedom from Britain. Canada for exemple became a British dominion (semi-indipendent country) so it could rule itself but its laws would still be subject to British oversight
In 1926 Britain and the Dominions agreed that they were all equal members of a community "united by a common allegiance to the Crown". This community was called the British Commonwealth of Nations or just the Commonwealth. The declaration was formalized in 1931 with the Statute of Westminister.
