This principle requires the protection of personal data by default.It consists of:

• collecting and processing, by default, exclusively the personal data which are strictly necessary for the purpose pursued by the processing;
• Limiting the amount of personal data collected, the scope of processing, the retention period of personal data and the number of people who can access the data.

This principle requires the protection of personal data from the design stage. The company must implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to ensure, from the development stage as well as throughout the product life cycle (a service, an application or a solution), its compliance with the GDPR and, in particular, the protection of the rights of data subjects.

A new payment management tool is in the design phase. The personin charge of the project must ensure before any launch that the new tool complies with the GDPR and think in advance about the security measures or the organisational measures to be put in place to avoid any leakage of personal data, for example.

For this same payment management tool, personal data are collected (e.g.: Bank details). The data collected must be limited to the processing of “payment management” (no other use!), only the data necessary for this processing must be collected and only the persons having a benefit in knowing them must have access thereto.
