Realized at the occasion of the #BOARD2024 event organized by the European Animal Research Association (EARA).
Animal technicians

Specialized in animal care, technicians working at the UMONS animal facility provide daily care to animals (food, water, enrichments), verify devices for light and temperature control, disinfect/sterilize cages and equipment, maintain high standards of hygiene at the animal facility, monitor animal health, behavior, and welfare by applying strict operating and biosafety procedures.

Ethical committee

The Commission is composed of at least 7 members including · The President · The Vice-President · The secretary · The veterinarian responsible for monitoring the health and welfare of animals · At least one representative of the "Maître d'expérience" (in vivo experiment manager) · At least one independent member (veterinarian) not belonging to the institution, · A biostatistician · A representative of the Animal Welfare Unit

Animal Welfare Unit

This unit is directed by a PhD with expertise in alternative methods and is completed by 2 animal technicians, 1 laboratory technician and, as a consultant, 1 Veterinary doctor. Key functions : • Advise animal caregivers concerning animal welfare (breeding, enrichments, animal care and use) • Advise the scientific and technic staff concerning 3R application: Replacement, Reduction, Refinement • Provide information regarding the development of New Alternative Methodologies (NAM). • Establish operating processes of internal control, reporting and follow-up of animal welfare at the UMONS animal facility. • Organize animal welfare training for new researchers and encourage continuing education for scientists involved in projects including animal experimentation.

Training in Animal experimentation Certificate in Laboratory Animal Science.

The learning outcomes are those required for recognition of the legal training of "Maître d'expérience", corresponding in the Belgian law to the FELASA Category C -persons responsible for directing animal experiments. Content: Legal and ethical aspects, refinement and alternatives to animal use; biology of the laboratory animals (taxonomy, anatomy, physiology, ethology, nutrition, husbandry); genetics and reproduction (cloning and transgenesis included); microbiology and animal disease; health hazards and safe practices, euthanasia, autopsy and waste management. Design and conduct of animal experiments.
