Narrative Writing
What makes a narrative essay great?
Let's go!
01
First, let's review...
Dialogue
Dialogue shows the words that a character in a story is saying. We know that a character is speaking when we see quotation marks around the words that they say. Example: "I never want to ride the bus again!" exclaimed Lanie as she walked in the front door. "Hey," mom called from the kitchen, "is everything okay?"
Description
When we use descriptive language, we are able to help our readers understand the characters and setting in our stories. Descriptive langauge usually includes sensory words. Examples: The cold air made Ariana shiver. Richard made a sour face as he bit into the fruit. The basement smelled dusty, which probably meant nobody had been down there for awhile.
Motivation
Giving our characters movitivation helps our readers understand WHY our characters are doing what they are doing. Example: Laityn has a shelf of 1st place trophies in her bedroom that she fought hard for and is extremely proud of. That is why, when her friend Victoria challenged her to a race, she was determined to win.

What are you doing?
What you are doing...
You will be using a Narrative Rubric to grade three narrative essays. Feel free to use highlighters or pens to mark the essays and take notes over what you notice about them. Make sure you label each rubric with the title of the essay you are grading. Read the essays out loud with your group. Make sure everybody has the chance to discuss how they think it should be scored.
