Introduction:
New words are constantly being created mostly in the form of new nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. A lot of these new words come from the creation of new things or products that request trademarks therefore it is theorized that this words may not stand the test of time.
Processes use to make new words
Blending:
This is the process of talking two or more words and using parts of them to create a new word: Examples: Brunch Breakfast + lunch – email electronic + mail emoticon emotion + icon.
Derivation:
Is the process of forming a new word by adding a derivational affix to a word.
re-, un-, dis-, in-, pre-, anti-, sub-, -ly, -ness, -er, -ity, -ation, -able, -ful.
Example: disagree, Unsure, Kindness.
Back Formation:
Is used to form a new word through the process of analogy by removing an affix or what appears to be an affix from that word. Example: Donate from donation, edit from editor, enthuse from enthusiasm.
Eponyms:
Are words formed from people’s names.Examples: Braille from Louis Braille who developed the system. Boycott, Fahrenheit.
Trade names:
Are words formed from people’s names.
Examples: Pinito, Kleenex, Jell-O, Google.
