In the Middle Ages, ways to calm patients during surgery were very complex and not entirely effective. One of the most commonly used ways to avoid pain was to drink alcohol, freeze the part that was going to be operated on or amputated, inhale sedative and only these privileges were held by those of the upper class, the rest of the people endured the horrible pain.
In 1846, William Morton, a disciple and colleague of Wells continued his research on anesthesia using sulfuric ether instead of nitrous oxide. He obtained excellent results and therefore deduced that it would be better used in surgeries and presented his discovery at the Massachusetts hospital in the removal of a tumor from a patient and thus modern anesthetiology was born.
Horace Wells was an American dentist who was looking for a way to perform a tooth extraction on his patients without them screaming in pain, one night in 1844 he decided to go to a presentation of a showman, where he was giving the audience a presentation of nitrous oxide, also called laughing gas, when he accidentally realize that one of the guests hurt his leg and fractured it, but he didn't let out a groan and hadn't even noticed the fracture. That is why after carrying out some tests and proving his theory, he decided to make a demonstration at the Masacchusets hospital, but due to a misadministration of the oxide he managed to get them to only make fun of his "supposed" discovery.
Regional anesthesia was discovered when the properties of cocaine as an analgesic were discovered in 1884. Its first use was as spinal anesthesia in 1898 in children. This type of anesthesia is the most commonly used today, but there are also other types such as epidural anesthesia and dental anesthesia.
It was a discovery that revolutionized medicine, today anesthesia is something elementary when performing surgeries and day by day anesthesiology is being updated to avoid the pain of patients and make them feel cared for when undergoing an intervention.
