An independent clause is a group of words that can stand alone as a sentence. Like "The boy played soccer." See? Complete thought.

Mrs. Johnson, I'm having trouble understanding what subordinating conjunctions are and how to use them.

No problem, Alex. Subordinating conjunctions are words that join a dependent clause to an independent clause.

A dependent clause can't stand alone as a complete sentence. It needs to be joined to an independent clause. Like "after he finished his homework."

So it's not a complete thought by itself?

Exactly! Now, we use subordinating conjunctions like "after," "because," "unless," etc. to connect that dependent clause to an independent clause. For example: "The boy played soccer after he finished his homework."

Oh, I see! The subordinating conjunction "after" joins the two clauses.

You've got it! Let's practice some examples. What subordinating conjunction could we use here: "I won't go outside ______ it stops raining."

Hmm... How about "unless"? "I won't go outside unless it stops raining."

Perfect! Here's another one: "We can go to the park ______ you finish your chores."

For that, we could say "if." "We can go to the park if you finish your chores."

Some other subordinating conjunctions include WISH BONE while, if, since, how, because, only if, now that, even though. You can also use A WHITE BUS, although, as, after, whenever, wherever, when, which, whereas, if, in case, in order, that, though, til, even, even though, even if, because, before, until, unless, since
