Tourism and Transport
There is an important and vital relationship between transport and tourism. Transport is both the cause and the effect of the growth of tourism. The cost of transport and its existence directly influence the customers’ choice of destination. Tourism supports transport services and infrastructure. Without tourism many areas would lose many of the public transport services that are currently provided.
Local residents benefit from the transport infrastructure as well as visitors.
How do people travel?
Nowadays, there are three main ways for travelling.
Water Transport
Air Transport
Land Transport
Air Transport
Since the introduction of the jumbo jets in the 1970s, the aviation industry has been constantly transforming the tourism industry. There are many factors that influence tourism, such as economic issues or terrorism.
Air transport is the primary mode for international tourism. Air transport is provided by many different airlines (or carriers) across the world, both for passengers and freight.
Many countries have a national carrier, such as British Airways for the UK, but most of these companies are no longer government-owned and are private businesses.
Flights
Air Transport
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is the trade body that represents the interests of the world’s major airlines. It has several goals such as improving safety and security standards or reducing airport taxes.
IATA classifies flights into the following categories:
Domestic (within the same country) or international (between two different countries). Short-haul (e.g. within Europe) or long-haul (intercontinental flight).
Non-stop (or direct) or Connecting (the other flight to get to the final destination).

Another important distinction IATA makes is between scheduled and charter flights.
Scheduled flights have an established timetable on fixed routes, independently from the number of passengers on board.
Chartered flights are not generally available directly to the individual traveller. They are reserved for the exclusive use of a person, group or company.
Often tour operators rent a plane for a specific route and period of time (mostly as part of a holiday package).

Sometimes two or more airlines may share the same flight. This business arrangement is known as codeshare agreement. For example, when booking a flight with Ryanair , you might see the words ‘operated by Malta Air’.
