START

What is mediation?

Mediating is processing information to facilitate communication:

  • between people who, for some reason, can't communicate directly.
  • providing information from a text to someone who can't access it.

oral mediation

You will receive a situation and a text or an infographic. You have to tell your partner about it, but your partner will not participate in the conversation.

You have 3 minutes to prepare and then you have to speak for 2 minutes.

You can take some notes during your preparation time.

tips

  • Read the information carefully. Identify the important points and make sure you can express them in English. Make some notes about that.
  • Anticipate possible problems with the language and see how you can avoid them; also, see if you can show off your vocabulary!
  • Be as natural as possible.
  • This is NOT A TRANSLATION, it’s a mediation.
  • Look at the situation. It will help you to adopt the right tone and select the information.
  • Stick to the information given; don’t add things you think or knew previously.

written mediation

Read the context carefully and adapt the message to the recipient (formal, informal, level of difficulty…)See if the context gives you clues to select the right information.

Make sure you know what you’re being asked to do: summarise, explain, expand, simplify…

Stick to the information in the text – don’t give your opinion or refer to your previous knowledge.

You’ll have to reduce the text significantly, so there’s no room for irrelevant information. You can change the order of the information, if you want.

Use your own words, but there’s no need to find a synonym for everything! Some words have no synonyms.

MEDIATION STRATEGIES

  • Have you summarised the main ideas?
  • Have you paraphrased the main points?
  • Have you avoided coying/ translating words or expressions literally?
  • Have you made it easy for the person you are helping to understand the main points?
