Retours de nos étudiants

As an international student at Lille, my experience was quite a remarkable one. The first attraction for me was the beautiful and ever bubbling city. From Lille Europe, Gare Lille Flanders to Cite Scientifique, the views were all stunning. At the University, the welcome week included activities by the international house (Maison international), the graduate programme (science for a changing planet), the library (Lillard Learning Center), a tour of the campus and the Natural Science buildings. These activities were very important as it helped in proper integration. I also had the privilege of participating in planned visits to the museum at Republic Beaux Arts; the Opale Coast and the Fortress of Mimoyecques, Landrethun-le-Nord, France. Lille is characterized by a high level of internationalization and it was an opportunity to learn in a multicultural environment and also make new friends. There are enough facilities in place for teaching and learning. Classes were taken by different specialists and each has its own way of delivery and assessments. The various assessments helped in building on my presentation, analytical, report writing, team work and time management skills. Life in Lille was generally worthwhile. The beautiful decorations that adorn the streets during the Christmas period was something I would love to witness over again. Another spotlight was the iconic Cite Scientifique train station which is right in the campus and makes it easy to connect other parts of the city.

Kingsley, Master PANGEA

I joined the student life in Lille in September of last year, and since day one, the city and the university have become close to my heart. I have experienced a warm welcome from the professors, the university workers, and my classmates. Everyone on campus offered to help with great kindness, starting from my Master's supervisor, who provided constructive communication during my studies and even before I arrived in Lille; since I was preparing for my travels to Lille, we kept in touch and he answered all my questions. Later, I discovered that many people at the university offered such kindness and help. I would have been lost if it hadn't been for the help of the Maison Internationale (the international student's house). All the Masion activities were helpful, from the city tour to thecampus tours to the administrative process and the help they provided to survive the French bureaucracy in applying for health insurance or accommodation assistance. I highly recommend new students connect with Maison International and attend their activities. You will get to meet new people, and at some point, you will be able to help others. The student life is unmatched on campus; you can go to the library and study there for hours, take a break or a walk over the terrace, or even book a room to have quiet space. It helped me get into the mood of studying without disturbance. As they say, you work hard, you play hard; after a long day of lectures and revisions, I would go to the student's house just in front of the library, sometimes they organize board games night, sometimes it's food from all over the world, and in special events, there will be music and dancing. There is always something to look for.

Ward, Master PHOCQS

I was a student at the science and technology faculty, and luckily, we also had our special events andactivities; of course, when you are an M2 student, you will not make it to every event, but you canalways show up to a scientific seminar or conference or a round table. The graduate programorganizes many of these events regularly, so you can grab a drink and casually discuss science withsenior researchers and scientists. These activities are essential to a future career, as they help youmake connections and discover new opportunities. As students in the Physics department, we had our special co-working space in the P1 building. Wehad everything you needed to study and relax between lectures and lunch. We have whiteboards tostudy in groups and have discussions while drinking coffee. I enjoyed these hours because I got thechance to meet new people from other Master's degrees. Now, my journey in Lille has come to an end, but I will always remember my days as rich with joy andknowledge.

Ward, Master PHOCQS

IntroductionHello! My name is Wajd, I am from Syria, I am 31 years old, and I already have a master degree inapplied mathematics. I am currently a student in the Master program in Data Science offered by theUniversity of Lille, Centrale Lille, and IMT Nord Europe. I arrived in Lille in August 2023, coming froma country that suffered from war for more than 12 years. Being in Lille has been an incredible experienceso far. In this feedback, I would like to share some highlights of my journey, both academically andpersonally, to help guide future students who are thinking about studying here. Academic ExperienceStudying at the Faculty of Science and Technology has been a rewarding experience. The professorsare supportive, and always willing to help students understand complex concepts. I was particularlyimpressed by the diversity of courses available and how they are designed to not only cover theoreticalknowledge but also practical applications. For example, in my courses on algorithms and complexity, machine learning, deep learning, and data challenge, I had the chance to work on hands-on projects thatreally prepared me for the real world. The resources at the university, such as the library ”Lilliad”, labs, study spaces, and restaurants, are top-notch and easily accessible. There is also a great emphasis onresearch, and I have had the opportunity to collaborate with some researchers on innovative projectsduring my internship at IRCICA in Lille.Life in LilleLille is a vibrant and student-friendly city. One of the things I love the most about living here is thecombination of history, culture, and modernity. The city is full of beautiful architecture, and manyFlemish influences remain. There are museums, large squares, and parks where you can relax after aday of studying. The public transport system is very efficient, making it easy to get around the city andeven to neighbouring countries like Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands on weekends! The local community is very welcoming. Lille has a dynamic student life with various clubs and societiesyou can join, which allows you to meet people with similar interests and even practice your French in afun and relaxed environment. The university also hosts frequent events, including cultural nights, sportsactivities, and workshops, which help you make connections and enjoy your time outside of studies.

Wajd, Master Data Sciences

Personal HighlightsThe most important thing that happened to me was that I met again my wife, who had arrived in Lilleone year before me. We are continuing our studies together and exploring the wonderful cultural andsocial components of northern France. We support Lille Football Club at the Pierre Mauroy Stadiumnear the university, which regularly organizes many international concerts for international singers andartists. Furthermore, we also spend our holidays in the most beautiful tourist areas near Lille. I alsoenrolled in a free French language course at the SUP-SUAIO building at the university and met manyinternational students who wanted to learn French in an atmosphere full of joy, activity and fun. DuringChristmas, I was amazed by the beautiful decorations in the Grand Place, the ascent to the big ferriswheel that allows you to see the entire city of Lille from the air and the wonderful atmosphere in thecity. Tips for Future Students• Be open to new experiences: Don’t be afraid to explore the city and try new things, whetherit’s learning a bit of French or trying out local cuisine (the cheese and frits are a must!).• Manage your time: Balancing studies with a social life can be tricky, but planning your timewell will help you make the most of both.• Ask for help: If you face any challenges, the university staff is always there to help. There is alsothe ”Maison Internationale”. It welcomes you and guides you before you even arrive in France, butalso throughout your studies, both on the administrative level (help with procedures, personalizedsupport) and on the social level (cultural discoveries, friendly activities). Don’t hesitate to reachout to them. Overall, my time in Lille has been an enriching experience, both academically and personally. I highlyrecommend this city and the University of Lille to any international students considering studying abroad.Good luck with your studies, and I hope to see you in Lille soon!
