MODAL VERBS

MAY - MIGHT - COULD

Modal verbs that express probability and permission.

Differences between them

In order to understand, we could say that could expresses a 60% of possibility, may a 50% and might a 30%. They're not followed by INFINITIVE.

MAY

We use may when something has a 50% of probability to happen. So, in fact, it's quite possible. It's also used as permission. EXAMPLES OF SENTENCES

  • It may rain tomorrow
  • May I go to the toilet?
  • May I open the window?

MIGHT

We use might when something has around 30% of possibilities to happen, so it's not very probable to happen. EXAMPLES OF SENTENCES

  • He might not come tomorrow
  • She might be interested on you

COULD

We use could when there's around 60% of possibilities. Besides, could, apart from being the past of can, it acts as possibility and ability. EXAMPLES OF SENTENCES

  • He could fall in love
  • Could you lend me your book?
  • She couldn't sleep yesterday (past)

SLIGHT DIFFERENCES

Sometimes we feel they're the same words and we can use them indistinctively. But most of the time they depend on the context too.

  • Ursula wants to invite Ariel to eat an ice-cream.
  • So, Ariel ....................say yes.
  • Flounder wants to invite Ariel to eat an ice-cream.
  • So, Ariel ....................say yes.
  • Ariel and Flounder...............................go to investigate a shipwreck.
