O fomento económico das colónias Até aos anos 40, o Estado Novo desenvolveu um colonialismo típico, sustentado pela produção de produtos primários e pelo desencorajamento do desenvolvimento industrial. As décadas seguintes foram marcadas por um reforço da colonização branca, pelo aumento dos investimentos públicos e privados e, também, por uma maior abertura ao capital estrangeiro. O investimento do Estado nas colónias fez parte dos Planos de Fomento. • A metrópole criou novas infraestruturas: caminhos-de-ferro, estradas, pontes, aeroportos, pontos, centrais hidroelétricas. • Desenvolveram-se os setores agrícola e extrativo. • Em relação ao setor industrial, verificou-se um crescimento, provocado pela liberalização da iniciativa privada, pela expansão do mercado interno e pelo reforço dos investimentos nacionais e estrangeiros. O fomento das colónias foi impulsionado quando a guerra colonial começou. • O deflagrar do conflito (1961-Angola e 1964-Moçambique) coincidiu com a época de maior dinamismo da economia portuguesa e reforçou a necessidade de uma presença nacional forte, que legitimasse a posse dos territórios do ultramar
