History of the Highland Games

It is said that the Highland Games originated way back in the 11th century. King Malcolm III was looking for a personal messenger, and to find the fittest and fastest runner of his kingdom; he held a race to the top of the mountain Craig Choinnich. Scottish clans then began using competitions like this to find the strongest and fastest people to guard the Clan Chieftain.

The Caber toss
One of the most iconic images of the Highland Games is tossing the caber. In this event, competitors lift a log made of Scots pine which measures 5 metres long and can weigh around 80kg! They must lift the log, run with it and toss it in the air. The log must flip, so the end originally at the top touches the ground before the other competitor's logs.
The Hammer throw
Another event still seen at the Olympic Games, the Hammer Throw. Competitors lift the hammer, which consists of a metal ball weighing around 9kg attached to a wooden pole handle; swing it around their head and throw it as far as they can!
The Tug o' war
The popular playground sports day challenge takes on a whole new level at the Highland Games. Teams usually consist of 8 (though smaller events may have teams of 5) pullers, and one or two team-mates who stand on the sidelines shouting encouragement and tactical instruction. They must pull a heavy rope and get the other team over the line to win.
