this one is SUPER helpful
These four basic operations function as normal, but a few notation things to keep in mind:
- The division button will make what you type look like a fraction. That is normal, so just keep going if that happens!
- Subtraction and negatives function the same in Desmos. You can use the minus button both to do subtratction AND type in front of a number to act as a negative sign.
- Addition appears as expected.
- Multiplication will be represented with a dot multiplier instead of the 'x' you learned in elementary school.
AN IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT THIS VERSION
This link is Pennsylvania's specific tool that will be on your computers while taking your Algebra Keystone Exams. This will save you from having to graph some things by hand, but pay attention! You cannot type equations in standard form. Notice the ⚠️ on line 3. That equation is in standard form and will NOT graph for you. You will need to: find the intercepts & connect those points - OR - convert the equation into slope-intercept form.
Equations need to start with x= or y= on this website.
If you need grouping symbols, you can use your keyboard (shift & 9 or 10) or the Desmos buttons.
To type absolute values in Desmos, just click this |a| button, and enter the value/expression inside.
To type exponents in Desmos, just enter the base value, click this ab button, and enter the exponent value. - OR - Hold in the Shift button & click 6 on the top of the keyboard to toggle the ^carrot button^ & enter the exponent.
THIS button is GOLD. This will easily convert numbers between fraction form & decimal form just by clicking it once you enter the values.
This is really going to help us when we talk about SLOPE.
Notice how just selecting that button changed the 1.5 into it's fraction form!
To type square roots in Desmos, just, click this √ button, and enter the number value you want to find the root of.
