In English there are some letters that are "silent". In other words, they are not pronounced even though they are written. Take a look at the following instances:
- B and N in final "mb" or "mn": "climb", "bomb", "hymn"...
- B is sometimes silent after t: "debt", "doubt", "subtle"...
- C is silent sielnt in initial "sc": "science", "scene", "scissors"...
- GH is silent in the group "ght": "eight", "tight", "thought"...
- GH is silent in: "although", "sigh", "neighbour"...
- K or G are silent in initial kn, gn: "knock", "knee", "knife", "gnat", "gnome"...
- S is sometimes silent after a vowel: "island", "aisle", "isle"...
- T is sometimes silent after s: "listen", "castle", "fasten"...
- W is silent in initial wr: "write", "wrist", "wrinkled"...
- Other cases of silent W are: "law", "saw", "answer", "knowledge"...
