What is a gerund?What is an infinitive?
What do you remember about when we use them?
We use the gerund:
1. As the subject at the beginning of a sentence. Smoking is bad for you. (Tobacco)
2. After all prepositions ( but not to) and after phrasal verbs He is afraid of flying. He has given up smoking.
We use the infinitive:
1. After adjectivesHe is too tired to study.
2. to express purpose or reasonWhy do you go to the beach? To relax I go to the beach to relax.

John arrived home late and the door was locked and he didn't have a key.
Try + infinitive ( make an attempt/ an effort to do sth difficult) * He tried to open the door but it he couldn't do it. Try + gerund ( make a suggestion or experiment to see if sth will work) * He tried ringing the doorbell... he tried knocking..but still he couldn't get in!!! .............but also
