1 | A) Le contexte historique et l'entrée en guerre

• 1941 : en Europe le début de l'opération Barbarossa est menée par les allemands qui vise à anéantir l'armée rouge pendant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale.

Japon - Allemagne - Italie

forment l'Axe

Durant cette période, les Etats-Unies n'étaient jusqu'ici pas en guerre.

Malgré que les Etats-Unis ne soient pas impliqués dans la guerre, ils fournissent du matériel au Royaume-Uni et à l'URSS.-> Donc pays non neutre.

• Juin 1940 : Le Japon envahit l'Indochine Française et s'allie à l'Axe.

Etats-Unis et Pays-Bas imposent un embargo total de pétrole et d'acier au Japon.

Début des tensions : Conquête japonaise s'étend dans le Sud et l'Est du Pacifique.

Pearl Harbor :

• Principale base naval américaine.
• Située sur l'île d'Oahu dans l'archipel d'Hawaï, 50ème état des Etats-Unis.

• Décembre 1941 :

86 unités et 25000 hommes de la flotte américaine étaient présents.-> Cible idéale pour le Japon.

• 1 décembre 1941 :

L'empereur Japonais autorise le bombardement de Pearl Harbor avec pour objectif : anéantir la flotte américaine pour conquérir ensuite l'Asie du Sud-Est et les îles du Pacifique.

L'amiral Yamamoto a prévu d'attaquer la base en 3 vagues pour un effet de surprise.

• 7 décembre 1941 : début de l'attaque à l'aube.

Entre 8h et 10h, les deux premières vagues ont lieu. Cependant, la 3ème vague n'aura jamais lieu car le bilan humain est trop élevé et il n'y a plus d'effet de surprise ! Le président américain Franklin Roosevelt annoncera que le 7 décembre 1941 est “un jour qui restera à jamais marqué d’infamie”.

Le code pour lancer l’attaque est : « Escaladez le Mont Niitika ! ».

1 | C) SES CONséquences dramatiques

-> Conséquences considérables :

• Nombreux dégats humains et matériels (ex : 1/2 des pertes américaines sont dues à l’explosion de l’USS Arizona faisant 1177 morts).
• 20 navires américains touchés.
• Pertes japonaises : 5 sous-marins coulés et 30 avions abattus.

Conclusion : Echec stratégique car la base américaine reste opérationnelle.

• 8 décembre 1941 : Franklin Rooselvet annonce, dans un discours à Washington, l'entrée en guerre des Etats-Unis aux côtés des Alliés.

France - Royaume Uni - URSS - Etats-Unis

• Durant 4 ans : Affrontements entre le Japon et les Etats Unis perdurent dans le Pacifique avant d'être arrêtés par les attaques nucléaires américaines de Hiroshima et Nagasaki en août 1945.

-> Cela met fin à la Seconde Guerre Mondiale.

2 | A) Le mémorial de l'USS ARIZONA

Inauguré le 30 mai 1962, le mémorial de l'USS Arizona se situe au dessus de l'épave qui réside encore au fond de la baie. L'accès au mémorial se fait uniquement par bateau-navette. Une salle commémorative a été créé dans laquelle les noms de tous les membres de l'équipage décédés ont été inscrits.

2 | B) L'USS Missouri Mémorial

L'USS Missouri, surnommé "Mighty Mo", est un cuirassé de classe Iowa de l'US Navy et a été mis en service en 1944.Il a participé à plusieurs opérations militaires majeures pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Après sa mise hors service en 1955, l'USS Missouri a été préservé en tant que navire musée à Pearl Harbor. En 1998, il a été officiellement ouvert au public en tant que mémorial.

Activités au sein du mémorial :

• Visites guidées : visites du pont principal, les salles des canons, la salle des machines, etc...
• Expositions et artefacts
• Événements spéciaux : cérémonies commémoratives, des démonstrations militaires et des activités éducatives.

2 | C) Le musée de l'aviation de Pearl Harbor

Le musée a été fondé en 1999. Situé sur la base aérienne historique de Ford Island, elle a elle même été attaquée pendant l'attaque de Pearl Harbor le 7 décembre 1941. Ce musée abrite de nombreux avions et s'engagent à préserver et à restaurer les anciens avions de guerre. Il organise des visites guidées, des activités éducatives et des événements spéciaux (conférences, cérémonies commémoratives, démonstrations aériennes, etc...)

Beginning of tensions : Japanese conquest expands in the South and East Pacific.

• Main U.S. naval base.
• Located on the island of Oahu in the Hawaiian archipelago, the 50th state of the United States.

• December 1941 :

The Japanese emperor authorized the bombing of Pearl Harbor with the aim of destroying the American fleet and then conquering Southeast Asia and the Pacific islands.

Admiral Yamamoto plans to attack the base in 3 waves to create a surprise effect.

• December 7, 1941 : start of the attack at dawn.

Between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., the first two waves take place. However, the 3rd wave never takes place, as the death toll is too high and there is no longer any element of surprise! U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt announced that December 7, 1941 was "a day that will live forever in infamy".

-> Considerable impact :

• Extensive human and material damage (ex : half of American losses are due to the explosion of the USS Arizona, killing 1,177 people).
• 20 American ships hit.
• Japanese losses : 5 submarines sunk and 30 aircraft shot down.

Conclusion : Strategic failure as the American base remains operational.

• December 8, 1941 : Franklin Rooselvet announces, in a speech in Washington, the entry of the United States into the war on the side of the Allies.

France - United Kingdom - USSR - United States

• For 4 years : Confrontations between Japan and the United States continued in the Pacific before being halted by the American nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945.

-> This put an end to the Second World War.

2 | A) USS ARIZONA Memorial

Inaugurated on May 30, 1962, the USS Arizona memorial stands above the wreck, which still lies at the bottom of the bay. Access to the memorial is by shuttle boat only. A memorial room has been created in which the names of all deceased crew members have been inscribed.

2 | B) USS Missouri Memorial

The USS Missouri, nicknamed "Mighty Mo", is an Iowa-class battleship of the US Navy and was commissioned in 1944.She took part in several major military operations during World War II. After her decommissioning in 1955, the USS Missouri was preserved as a museum ship at Pearl Harbor. In 1998, it was officially opened to the public as a memorial.

Activities within the memorial:

• Guided tours : visits to the main deck, gun rooms, engine room, etc.
• Exhibitions and artefacts.
• Special events : commemorative ceremonies, military demonstrations and educational activities.

2 | C) Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum

The museum was founded in 1999. Located on the historic Ford Island Air Force Base, it was itself attacked during the Pearl Harbor invasion on December 7, 1941. The museum contains numerous aircraft and is committed to preserving and restoring old warplanes. It organizes guided tours, educational activities and special events (conferences, commemorative ceremonies, aerial demonstrations, etc.).
