tâche intermediaire: Workplace safety
You and your partner will participate in a role-play set in a laboratory. One of you will act as an employee, and the other will play the role of the manager. The goal is to enact a workplace accident and then engage in a dialogue to discuss the incident, identify its causes, and propose preventive measures that could have avoided it.

- En tant qu'employé, préparez-vous à jouer le rôle de quelqu'un qui a été témoin ou victime de l'accident. Pensez à vos émotions, vos réactions, et les détails que vous pouvez fournir sur l'accident.
- En tant que manager, préparez-vous à jouer le rôle de quelqu'un qui doit enquêter sur l'accident et proposer des mesures préventives. Réfléchissez à des questions pertinentes que vous poserez à l'employé.

Understanding a memo
- Identify the structure and key components of the internal memo.
- Discuss in small groups the importance of each section and how it contributes to overall workplace safety.
- Make notes on any terms or phrases you are unfamiliar with and look them up.
Role-play
- Split into pairs or small groups. One person acts as an employee with questions or concerns about the new protocols, and the other acts as the Health and Safety Manager responding to these questions.
- Practice explaining the procedures and answering questions clearly and concisely.

- Lately, you have been shocked by the number of technicians who were working in unsafe conditions or failing to report hazards in the laboratory.
- Write a memo to make your colleagues aware of the new safety protocol which will come into effect next month.

- Your note is aimed at your colleagues. The goal is to inform them of the new protocol and to make sure that they understand why safety is so important. Your note must be factual.
- State the current situation, explain what is wrong with it and what you all – as a team – need to do about it to make sure that everyone is working in safe conditions.
- Give plenty of recommendations using should, could and would.
