Introduction

The Madison jazz community features incredible talent from a variety of musicians. These musicians are well recognized within the jazz scene in Madison, but limited outsiders know about them. The slideshow highlights various local jazz musicians, providing audiences with an opportunity to get a taste of jazz and the various styles they offer. Here are ten incredible Madison-based musicians to support.

Laurie Lang

Laurie Lang is a jazz bass musician and educator based in Madison. From Ripon, Wisconsin, Lang is the president of the Madison Jazz Society and is committed to expanding jazz education in the Madison area.

Hanah Jon Taylor

Hanah Jon Taylor is the owner of Cafe CODA, the leading jazz club in Madison. Taylor is also a jazz saxophonist and flutist, with a career lasting over 30 years.

The Tony Castaneda Latin Jazz Band

The Tony Castaneda Latin Jazz Band has been performing Latin jazz music for over 20 years to Madison audiences. The band works to maintain the "golden age of latin jazz."

Gerri DiMaggio

Gerri DiMaggio is a Madison jazz vocalist. DiMaggio intertwines Latin influence with a traditional jazz sound in her performances to create a warm, sophisticated sound.

Acoplados

Acoplados is a Folk-Afro-Latin jazz group based in Madison that combines Afro-Caribbean and Latin American folk music with jazz. Acoplados has performed at the Madison Jazz Festival and Madison radio station WORT.

Mark Hetzler is a Professor of Trombone at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Hetzler has released 12 solo recordings, and composed various pieces for individuals and groups.

Betsy Ezell is a jazz vocalist and composer from Madison. Ezell has been a jazz vocalist since young and began composing in 2014.

Charlie Painter Trio

The Charlie Painter Trio is led by jazz guitarist and educator, Charlie Painter. Painter combines blues, big band and bop styles of jazz to create a unique performance experience.

Two Jackets

Two Jackets is a jazz quintet based in Madison that performs contemporary and original jazz. In 2020, Two Jackets won a DIG jazz recognition from the Greater Madison Jazz Consortium.

Jim Erickson

Jim Erickson is a solo jazz pianist and composer in Madison. Erickson has performed at the Isthmus Jazz Festival and won national awards for his compositions.
