Dune

Description of the movie

Dune II, is the adaptation of Frank Herbert's novel Dune and is the sequel to Dune, the first part of which was directed by the same director and released in 2021.The story takes place on Arrakis, a planet also known as "Dune," which is entirely desertic with the precious resource: the spice. That's why the title of the movie is "DUNE" A lot of tribes seek to intensify its production so it creates many conflicts. After a chaotic end to the first volume of this saga, Paul seeks to avenge his family from the Harkonnens. To do so, he will unite with the desert people: the Fremen. Some Fremen will support Paul, hoping that he will fulfill the prophecy. Paul's mother, Jessica, will become the Reverend Mother of Sietch Tabr, tasked with spreading the rumor about Paul as "Muad'dib." Paul will remain with the Fremen out of fear that his vague visions may come true. It's only when he drinks the water of life that everything becomes clear. At the end of the film, after many battles, we witness a challenge between Paul and Shaddam, who chooses Feyd-Rautha as his champion. By the end of the film, we assume it marks the beginning of the holy war.

I really enjoyed this movie; I wasn't familiar with this saga before the release of the second film. However, the charm of certain scenes, accompanied by the magnificent music of Hans Zimmer, completely captivated me. Personally, I preferred the second one. Indeed, the first film sets the context and introduces the different planets and peoples, while the second one is filled with action, suspense, and twists.I watched out of curiosity the difference in cost between Avatar 2 and Dune 2. For me, both are very popular films with fictional worlds. However, to my surprise, the cost of Avatar is estimated at over 400 million dollars, while Dune 2 is estimated at 190 million dollars, which is half the amount.Furthermore, after discussing with my friends, I learned that the film didn't include many details compared to the book. As I had a bit of difficulty to understand all the subtleties and hidden messages of the author, I'm curious to read the books to better understand and analyze this saga…

Furthermore, did you know that the spice in the movie actually represents the fuel of our world? Indeed, as the Harkonnens say, "Whoever controls the Spice controls the universe." In the film, the spice is depicted as a rare resource whose price increases as its stock decreases. This references the power of our fossil energy, without which we couldn't be where we are. The various clans fight to monopolize this spice, much like the different countries of our world, regardless of the impact on the ecosystem and biodiversity. In addition to politics, religion is also omnipresent in the film Herbert wrote Dune to warn us about the dangers of "superheroes" or superhumans. He believes that the figure of the prophet, as presented by monotheistic religions, is a perfect example of this superhero. He tries to show how social systems, especially the religious system, can be dangerous because they dominate humans. For him, religion, like many other systems, is based on a paradox: it controls humans while also promising their liberation. Thanks to this political and religious caricature, the movie has allowed me to have a new perspective on how these issues can manifest in our own world.

Stellan Skarsgård's body makeup took 7 hours to apply and 2 hours to remove for every day of shooting. He didn't drink anything and took Imodium pills in order to avoid having to go to the bathroom during shooting days.

Hans Zimmer was asked to create the music for Tenet, but as the composer is a big fan of the Dune universe, he preferred to work on Denis Villeneuve's film instead. Therefore, Tenet is Christopher Nolan's first film since The Prestige (2006) on which Hans Zimmer did not compose the soundtrack. Additionally, he has a cameo in the film!
