OK, so that makes sense. Reading depends on language, so teaching all elements of language in ways that research has revealed as being effective develops strong readers and writers.
I'm not sure that I've thought about reading like that before; I tend to focus on the skills covered in the grade level I teach. Explicitly and systematically teaching all aspects of language, moving from simple to complex skills, supports developing readers and writers; it helps them move through the complexity of our language, from single words to complicated text.
