Go with the Spirit of the Question
When answering exam questions, try to figure out what the FAA is actually asking you. Some questions on the exam might leave out a piece of information that could change your answer or you might be able to find a small loophole/technicality that makes the question very complex. This is almost never the case with these questions, and the most basic & straightforward process is usually the correct one.
Read the Question Very Carefully
Often a single word or unit of measurement can be the difference between the correct answer and an incorrect one. Read each question and answer word-for-word before making your selection.
Don’t Overthink the Question
It can be easy on some questions to climb deep into a rabbit hole of technicalities that distract from the main point of the question. Go with what feels right and what you believe the main point of the question is.
Some Questions May Answer Others
Occasionally, the answer to a question can be found in a later question. Keep an eye out for this when taking the exam. Remember that you can move fluidly through the test questions, return and change your answers at any time, and can complete the exam in any order you choose.
Keep Track of Unknown Questions
If you don’t know the answer to a question, skip it and move on. You can revisit any question at any time. Additionally, a later question might answer a previous one. Please remember to answer all questions before submitting the exam.If you are unsure on a question or you've skipped it, keep track of the question on a piece of scratch paper. Write down question numbers you are unsure on or want to revisit. At the end, time permitting, you can go back and revisit all of these questions.
Eliminate Wrong Answers
You might encounter a question or two where you just don't know the answer. Reviewing all the available answers can eliminate at least one of the incorrect answers. This is especially true on math and latitude / longitude questions where the incorrect answers are often WAY off. Additionally, if you've never seen certain words or terms before, the answer is probably incorrect.
Use a Calculator on Math Problems
You will be required to do basic math on some of the exam questions. You might be tempted to work the problem out in your head, but don't let a simple math error cost you a question. You will be provided a calculator on the exam and we highly encourage you to use it and double check all of your math work.
Get to the Test Early
Feeling rushed can fluster you and cause poor exam performance. Many exam centers have a waiting area or a coffee place nearby. We recommend getting to the testing center at least 30 minutes prior to the start of your exam. Use the extra time to look over a study guide and relax.
Take Your Time
Take your time answering each question. You should easily be able to finish the exam in the allotted 120 minutes, so don’t feel rushed or pressured.
Get a Good Night’s Rest
Just like an aircraft, your brain needs fuel and maintenance. Get a good 8 to 10 hours of rest the night before and eat a nutritious meal before the exam. Donuts and energy drinks don't count.
