The Orangutan
INFORMATION
The Bornean orangutan is critically endangered and there are an estimated 104,700 individuals. The Sumatran orangutan is considered critically endangered with an estimated population of less than 14,000; and the Tapanuli orangutan is also critically endangered with an estimated population of less than 800.
CAUSE
The causes are deforestation, illegal trafficking of specimens and the exploitation of their natural habitat, as a consequence of the rapid expansion of oil palm plantations, whose fruit is sold to manufacture oil and many other food products.
ASPECT
They have a large head, long and flexible arms, small eyes and abundant red-orange fur. Standing they can measure two meters and males weigh up to 120 kilos.
HOW TO STOP THEIR EXTINCTION
Help save orangutans and their habitat by supporting The Nature Conservancy through a one-time or monthly gift. TNC and several local and international partners are working urgently to reduce deforestation in Indonesia and save orangutans and other wildlife.
You do not have to buy products made with palm oil.
