Training and simulation game

A training and simulation serious game is a type of game that aims to provide a practical and immersive experience in a simulated environment, with the goal of developing or enhancing specific skills. These games are designed to allow users to practice in virtual situations that replicate real or fictional scenarios. They can be used in various fields, such as medicine, the military, aviation, the industrial sector, etc., to train and assess individuals' skills in a safe and controlled environment.

Exemple :Virtual Battle Space (VBS): This simulator allows military personnel to train in realistic virtual environments, simulating combat scenarios, patrols, and tactical coordination.

Advertising game

The purpose of an advergame is to promote a product or brand's image showcased within it, thus receiving good advertising exposure. The game may also simply highlight the characteristics or advantages of the product or brand. If the advergame goes viral and reaches beyond the brand's target audience, the impact can be immense.

Exemple : "Burger King Sneak King": This game features the Burger King character distributing hamburgers to people while promoting products from the fast-food chain.

Tests and adjustments

The game is tested to ensure that it functions as intended and achieves its objectives. Adjustments are made based on feedback from testers and stakeholders. Once the game has been tested and approved, it is ready to be launched. This may involve its publication on online platforms, integration into existing training systems, etc.

Create the visual universe

During the graphic design phase of your game, you create the visual universe, characters, backgrounds, and animations, a crucial step as the aesthetics of your game directly influence the user experience. By analyzing the client's brand identity, target audience, and competitors, you ensure that the game is both enjoyable and tailored to the user. This stage includes establishing a mood board representing the tone and theme of the project, as well as reviewing the brand's existing stylistic guidelines to serve as a reference, followed by a brainstorming session to define the final graphic style of the game.

The rise of serious games

The 1980s marked a significant period for serious games, with the emergence of popular titles such as "Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?" and "Oregon Trail." These games offered unique learning experiences, teaching geography and the history of crossing the United States, respectively. Their success demonstrated the effectiveness of serious games as educational tools, allowing them to integrate into educational systems and beyond.

Monitoring and maintenance

Once the game is launched, it is important to monitor its usage and provide updates or corrections as needed. Tracking the game's performance against its initial objectives is also essential to evaluate its long-term effectiveness.

These two educators proposed a classification of serious games in a book published in 2010 titled "Introduction to Serious Games." According to them, there are five main types. This classification is representative but not exhaustive.

Types & applications

Serious games, diverse in their types, offer various applications ranging from professional training to social awareness.

CONTINUE

Political games

A political game is a serious game that addresses specific political and social issues with a clearly defined message or perspective. These games often aim to raise awareness among players about issues such as human rights, social injustice, the environment, or other contemporary political issues. They may be designed to encourage critical thinking, promote political ideals, or inspire social and political action. These games often use narrative and interactive power to evoke empathy, provoke debates, and inspire change.

Exemple : McDonald's Videogame : it is an online game by Molleindustria, part of anti-advergames, satirizing corporate practices. Players experience four perspectives: farmland, slaughterhouse, restaurant, and "tiwari," each affecting society. Players act as McDonald's CEOs, making choices like feeding cows GMOs and deforesting land. They can employ advertising and corruption to counter opponents.

Storytelling

Storytelling is the art of telling stories in a captivating and meaningful way to communicate messages effectively. Once the game objectives are defined, it's important to create a narrative that reflects the players' professional context. This approach allows players to review their knowledge and practice to enhance their practical skills. The use of alternative scenarios based on players' choices can enrich the gaming experience. It is recommended to collaborate with a specialized storytelling agency to design a compelling and relevant story that will help achieve the game's objectives.

Integration

The various elements of the game are integrated into a suitable platform or development environment. This may include integrating special features such as player progress tracking, feedback systems, etc.

The history of serious game

Serious games are not a new concept born with Ben Sawyer and David Rejewski's serious games initiative in the early 2000s. In fact, their history dates back much further, to the 1970s and even beyond. A notable example is the book "Serious Games" published by Clark Abbott in 1970, providing an early glimpse of this concept. Additionally, examples like the German "Craig Spell" from the 1700s demonstrate the use of games for military training purposes. These early examples attest to a long history of serious games, well before their contemporary popularity.

Are you lost ? There is the script

Serious games is kind of a strange term. Right, you have serious and you have games. What does that really mean? It seems like an oxymoron, but the term serious games has developed because people wanted to make a distinction between games for entertainment and fun and enjoyment, and games that had a serious outcome and outcomes such as giving a social message or a marketing message or, in our case, a learning message. Serious game from a learning perspective is a game that allows people to learn. So, a lot of people think that the term serious games originated in 2000 with the series around 2000 with the serious games initiative Ben Sawyer and David Rejeski. But that's not the case at all. If we go back in time to the 1970s, a gentleman named Clark Abbott actually created a book called serious games, actually published in 1970. The interesting thing, I think, about this is the book is about serious games, and most people don't think about serious games in the 70s. And the book only cost a dollar 95. So, a great price for the book. But when you think about serious games, you can go back even further in history. And the 1700s, there was actually something called Kriegsspiel, which is German for war games. And these folks actually created a board game and it was thought to be one of the first instances of a serious game where they created a board game and you actually had units on each side and it was used to train soldiers strategies of warfare. So if that's not a serious game, I don't know what is, teaching people how to fight and how to battle. So serious games have a long, rich history. In fact, some researchers think that serious games actually go back further than even the 1700s. So serious games have a long history. But let's move up in time to the 1980s where we had, kind of, I think the breakthrough of two really popular serious games. One was "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?" Very serious game teaching geography. And the other was "The Oregon Trail." "The Oregon Trail" was the game about crossing in the United States from one side to the other. We could learn history as you went through that process, a serious game that allowed people to understand how the process worked. So serious games have been used for a long time. Serious games have been used in schools. But now it's time to rethink why we want to use serious games. Our educational system is typically, and even in organizations, companies, and businesses, is around the model of linear learning, an industrial model. But games can give us nonlinear experiences. We don't always have to go in order. We can think about strategy differently. We can think about elements differently. We have the freedom to fail. All those things are really benefits of serious games. There are a lot more benefits of serious games and they can really help an organization and an individual learn, grow, and become better. So I encourage you to think about the use of serious games and take seriously serious games because they lead to serious learning.

The prototype

In the design of a serious game, several key elements must be considered to ensure a successful user experience. First and foremost, it is essential to think about user experience (UX) and ensure that the story and interactive flow align with the intended objectives. Additionally, it is crucial to tailor the game according to specific goals and target audience, considering the level of challenge, clarity, and user-friendliness to meet the needs and expectations of users. An important step involves framing the user experience by creating a proof of concept, including mock-ups and graphical appearance tests to address potential issues before development. After presenting the prototype to the client, feedback is incorporated to finalize the visual aspect and create a style guide for future projects. Finally, to make the game more engaging, it is recommended to integrate playful gameplay mechanics that motivate users, such as goals to achieve, challenges, rewards, and rankings, while helping them learn and develop interactively.

Importance in current life

Serious games are not limited to historical learning, but also offer a new potential in contemporary education. Unlike linear and rigid learning models, serious games provide non-linear experiences that encourage creativity, strategic thinking, and freedom from error. By seriously embracing serious games, organizations and individuals can benefit from more engaging, dynamic, and effective learning, thereby transforming the way we learn and evolve.
