Introduction

Cardiovascular system OVERVIEW

The cardiovascular system delivers oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and other important substances to cells and organs in the body. It plays an important role in helping the body meet the demands of activity, exercise, and stress. ~Nebrasksa Dept. of Ed

Cardiovascular Disease

Heart Failure/Transplant

In a heart transplant procedure, a surgeon removes the diseased heart and sews the donor heart in place. He or she then attaches the major blood vessels to the donor heart.

Treating Clogged Arteries

The heart doctor (cardiologist) guides a thin, flexible tube (catheter) to the narrowed part of the heart artery. A tiny balloon is inflated to help widen the blocked artery and improve blood flow. A small wire mesh tube (stent) may be placed in the artery during angioplasty

Dissolving Blod Clots

Thrombolytics - medicine that dissolves blood clots. Catheter-directed thrombolysis - a procedure in which a long tube, called a catheter, is surgically inserted and directed toward the blood clot where it delivers clot-dissolving medication

Topics of Importance

blood types

antigens

The Rh factor is one of several antigens that specialists use to determine blood compatibility. A mismatch in blood types can cause an intense immunogenic reaction that can be fatal. This antigen determines if blood types are negative or positive.

AGGLUTINATION

AGGLUTINATION

A man is looking to see which family member is a match for his blood type. He has Type B blood type. There are 4 donors in the family. Your job is to determine which donor is the right match.

THE DONOR

Donors

1. Based on your findings, who do you determine to a matching donor? 2. People with the blood type AB are known as "universal recipients". Could you explain in your own words what this means? 3. What do you think would have happened if you mixed the blood from Donor #1 with Donor #2. Explain your answer. 4. Usually before blood from one donor is transfused into a recipient, medical personnel will request that a procedure called cross-matching be performed. Research and explain cross-matching and why it is a helpful procedure.
