INTRODUCTION
Today, how we dispose of our products can have a big impact on the environment. In this project, we will explore what happens when products are not disposed of properly and decompose in the environment. We will see how this can affect our world and what we can do about it. The process of decomposition varies depending on the type of material and environmental conditions, but in general, it is a gradual process facilitated by decomposing micro-organisms that transform materials into simpler substances over time. Between 8 and 12 million tonnes of plastic end up in the oceans of badly recycled waste.
How long it takes for products to decompose in the sea
The decomposition of products in the sea is a challenging and alarming process. Materials such as plastic can take up to 500 years to disintegrate, leaving a lasting mark on our oceans and endangering marine life. The accumulation of marine litter is a global problem that requires immediate action, such as reducing plastic consumption and implementing stricter waste management policies. Cleaning up our coasts and promoting sustainable waste management practices are crucial steps to protect our valuable marine ecosystems and guarantee a healthy future for generations to come.
And how long on the ground?
For example, plastic takes a long time to decompose and pollutes the soil, damaging animals and plants. In addition, some products contain toxic substances that can get into groundwater. Dumping rubbish also produces gases that makes climate change even worse. It is important to recycle and manage waste properly to take better care of our planet and avoid these problems.
THE PLASTIC
Plastics are one of the main environmental pollutants due to their durability and difficulty to degrade. It is estimated that more than 300 million tonnes of plastic are produced worldwide each year, and much of this plastic ends up in landfills, oceans and other natural environments. In addition, marine animals often ingest plastics, which can cause serious injury and even death.
biodegradable products
Bio is the ability of a material to be naturally decomposed by organisms in an ecosystem. Recycling prevents many of our wastes from ending up on beaches and in forests, due to the long degradation time they have, we avoid contaminating the habitat of animals and plants for years. There are other ways to use everyday products whithout damaging the environment, which are these types of products: - Bio bag : 80 days - Bio cutlery : 90 days - Bio urn : 10 minutes
time to decompose
THE SHORTEST:
tHE LONGEST:
tHE GLASS
tHE BANANA PEEL
Glass does not decompose because it is made of materials that cannot be broken down by living organisms, and it is also very resistant to the chemical and physical processes that normally break down other materials. So even if it breaks, pieces of glass remain in the environment for a long time without decomposing completely.
Banana peel decomposes quickly due to its composition that is rich in water, sugars and organic matter. These factors provide an ideal environment for the growth of bacteria and fungi that accelerate the decomposition process.
