Reading - Why does poetry matter?

Action

Some historians believe that we began to create poetry before we even learnt how to writel Poetry has always been a part of our story and it has evolved over time to adapt to our changing lifestyles, attitudes and relationships. Poetry is all around us in some shape or form - from a jingle in a television commercial or a pop song playing on the radio, to the epic poetry produced by the ancient Greeks or the beautiful verses written by literary giants such as Keats or Shelley - and we just can't seem to get enough of it. Poetry enriches our lives, teaches us empathy and compassion for others and helps us to express ourselves through language and imagery. Poetry doesn't impose the same restrictions as other forms of writing do, and has a certain music to it that cannot be found in the lines of a letter or a story. Through poetry, we can set ourselves free and open our minds to new possibilities. Poems can help us cross boundaries - they can be found in all cultures, and our shared love of verse can help us make connections with others. For centuries philosophers and writers have contemplated what makes a poem a poem and whether we can truly tell a good poem from a bad one. Many people believe that poetry is essential to our lives, and without it life would be a little less magical.

POETS ON POETRY

1. "Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words." - Robert Frost 2. "Poetry is an spontaneus overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility." - William Wordsworth 3. "If I read a book and it makes my whole body so cold no fire can ever warm me, I know that is poetry." - Emily Dickinson

What is a Poem?

Inquiry

Rules, rules and more rules! When it comes to writing, there always seem to be so many rules that we have to follow. While this also applies to the writing of poems, over the years many writers have chosen to abandon some of the common conventions of poetry, which means that defining a poem is harder than ever. However, as a new and aspiring poet, it's a good idea for you to pay attention to some of these basic rules to help you get started, To begin, we must first decide on what a poem actually is. Poems don't need to abide as strictly to rules and we are given more freedom to play with language, syntax and layout. While most prose is written to be read, poems are written to be recited, so often, but not always, they have a certain rhythm and rhyme that other forms of writing may not have. A poem is a type of literary text that allows writers to express themselves through making distinctive stylistic choices. Poetry has the power to convey feelings and ideas through language and imagery.

Inquiry

STANZAS

In prose we use paragraphs to arrange our writing, but in poems we use stanzas. A stanza can also be referred to as a verse. A stanza is made up of a number of lines and is usually separated from the other stanzas in the poem by using a space. The number of lines in a stanza can vary; sometimes all the stanzas in a single poem contain the same number of lines but this is not always the case. A poet can decide how many stanzas to include in their poem, and it is common to find poems that are written in a single stanza.

Inquiry

What Makes a Poem?

The following poem was written by the American poet Emily Dickinson in 1862. Dickinson didn't give many of her poems titles, so today we know it simply as poem number 632.The poem is made up of three stanzas. Let's take a look at what Dickinson has included in her poem.

632 The Brain-is wider than the Sky- For-put them side by side- The one the other will contain With ease-and You-beside The Brain is deeper than the sea- For-hold them-Blue to Blue- The one the other will absorb- As Sponges-Buckets-do- The Brain is just the weight of God- For-Heft them-Pound for Pound- And they will differ-if they do- As Syllable from Sound-

  3. Interpret the message of Dickinson´s poem.
  4. Create four similes of your own about your brain.

Sound in poetry

One of the most effective ways of bringing your writing to life or transporting your reader into the world of your poem, is by introducing sounds! The easiest and (by far the most fun) is through the use of onomatopoeia. Onomatopoeia refers to words which create sounds, for example:

buzz - splash - hiss - pop - sizzle - whoosh - bang

Inquiry

Inquiry

Another simple way to introduce sound in your writing is through the use of alliteration. Alliteration is the repetition of sounds in a sentence or a line. For example, let's look at an extract from a poem by Edgar Allan Poe called 'The Raven.In the poem, the narrator is home alone on a dark winter's night and feeling a little jumpy because of someone constantly knocking on his door. Creepy, right? Every little noise becomes amplified and here he describes the sound of the curtains moving in the wind: 'And the silken, sad, uncertain rustling of each purple curtain Thrilled me - filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before;

Inquiry

Which sound is being repeated? What effect does this create? Clever, isn't it?Be careful! - some people mistakenly think that alliteration is the repetition of letters - this is wrong, as Poe's poem proves. More than one letter is capable of making a certain sound (giraffe and jam; cake and kite; seal and ceiling; phone and fish). Can you find any examples of onomatopoeia or alliteration in a poem?

Action

List poems

Are you itching to write a poem of your own? List poems are a fantastic way to ease yourself into the writing process. So, what is a list poem? A list poem does exactly what it says on the tin! It is quite simply a poem made up of a long list of things. Let's take a look at an example written in 1940 by Jack Prelutsky, an American writer of children's poetry. Find and read the poem, Bleezer's Ice Cream.

Action

List poems

As you read the poem, consider the following:

  1. How many stanzas are there in this poem?
  2. Evaluate why a list poem might appeal to a younger audience.
  3. How does the writer 'frame' his list?
  4. How 'delicious' does the ice cream in Bleezer's freezer sound to you? Which words or phrases can you identify that contradict this point?

Action

5. Can you identify a rhyme scheme? What is the effect of this?Ready to have a go at writing your own poem? Using Prelutsky's poem as a guide, write your own list poem about one of the following: * compucer games * parents * food. Try to include some of the techniques we have explored already in this chapter. Once you have written your poem, share it with a partner or in a group and give each other constructive feedback. Improve your poems with the feedback you have received.

Summative Speaking

Produce a creative voice-over video by narrating your original poem with clarity and emotion. Prioritize rehearsal to enhance your delivery and infuse creativity into your performance. Be creative, practice before recording.
