STEREOTYPES

STEREOTYPES
What is the stereotypes?

Stereotypes are indirect opinions. They are superficial and or inaccurate beliefs. There are three types of stereotypes: positive, negative and neutral. There are stereotypes based on gender (male or female) but also for different ethnicity. An example the Italian eats spaghetti.

What is the history of gender stereotypes?

Stereotypes have always been there. We have been influenced as children by the whole world, but also by friends or relatives even without wanting to be.

In everyday life we use gender stereotypes much more often than we think.

DISCRIMINATIONS

DISCRIMINATIONS

What are the discriminations?

Discrimination is when a person is unjustifiably treated differently or excluded from a service or opportunity (a job, a home, , public transportation, etc.).

The two oldest forms of discrimination are:

  1. against women some 5000 years ago among nomadic peoples
  2. against foreigners in general (xenophobia).

...AND WE?

What would we do to decrease discrimination and stereotypes?

Be aware. Don't stop at 'that's the way it's always been done' or 'everyone thinks like that' and above all don't belittle the word of someone who claims to be a victim of a stereotype.

We can create equal opportunities for all

Question yourself.

EUROPE AND ITALY

Does Europe have laws to protect gender stereotypes and discrimination?

On 8 March 2023, the European Commission started a campaign to combat gender stereotypes about men and women. This is a concrete goal of the Strategy for Gender Equality 2020-2025.

The 2030 Agenda also has a goal based on gender equality. It is to eliminate all kinds of discrimination (social, political, ethnic and gender). It is Article Five.
