Gaps around windows

Upgrade window seals with weather-resistant materials. Consider adding caulking or weatherstripping to seal any gaps around window frames, preventing drafts and enhancing insulation.

Thermal mass

Combining thermal mass with proper insulation is essential for maximising energy efficiency. Insulation helps to reduce heat transfer through the building envelope, while thermal mass provides thermal inertia, which delays temperature changes. Together, they create a more stable and comfortable indoor environment with reduced reliance on mechanical heating and cooling systems.

Wall cracks

For small cracks acrylic or latex caulk is often suitable. For larger cracks or cracks in different materials like concrete or masonry, consider using silicone caulk or polyurethane sealant.

Gaps around and under doors

Openings for floor or ceiling ducts used to transmit heating or cooling

Weather Stripping Installed around the perimeter of the duct opening. Mastic Sealant Mastic sealant is a flexible adhesive that can be applied with a brush or trowel to seal joints and seams in ductwork. Gaskets Gaskets around the edges of the duct openings. These can be made of rubber or other flexible materials and provide a tight seal between the duct and the opening.

Gaps around ceiling downlights

Older style incandescent downlight fittings and gimballed (swivel) halogen fittings allow significant amounts of air leakage. Install airtight and IC-rated (Insulation Contact) covers or boxes around ceiling downlights. Sealed LED fittings reduce air leakage and are the best option for downlights.

Gaps around insulation material

Caulk or Sealant Small gaps and cracks around insulation material can be filled with silicone, latex, or acrylic. Weather Stripping Weather stripping around the edges of insulation panels or in between insulation and adjacent building materials. Weather stripping helps create a tight seal and prevents air leakage around the insulation. Insulation Board Rigid insulation board to cover gaps and create a continuous thermal barrier. Vapor Barrier Vapor barrier over insulation material to prevents moisture infiltration and enhances the overall effectiveness of the insulation.
