WHAT IS IT?
Climate change refers to long-term changes in temperatures and weather patterns. These changes may be natural, but since the 19th century, human activities have been the main driver of climate change.
CAUSES
- Greenhouse gases
- Fertilizer use
- Excessive waste generation
- Waste of energy
- Tree felling
- Fuel burning
- Food production
- Transport
Greenhouse gases are gases that retain part of the infrared radiation that the Earth emits after being heated by the Sun, that is, gases that retain energy in the atmosphere.
GREENHOUSE GASES
The use of fertilizers is a risk for the environment if they are used in excess since the leftover nutrient can contaminate surface or underground waters.
FERTILIZER USE
Your home and how you use energy, the way you get around, what you eat and the amount of waste you throw away all contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. So does the consumption of goods such as clothing, electronics and plastics.
EXCESSIVE WASTE GENERATION
Energy waste occurs when energy is produced but not used, or when it is used inefficiently. In many cases, it results in greenhouse gas emissions and other types of environmental pollution.
WASTE OF ENERGY
It causes emissions, since trees, when cut, release the carbon they have been storing. Because forests absorb carbon dioxide, their destruction also limits nature's ability to keep emissions out of the atmosphere.
TREE FELLING
When fossil fuels burn, they release carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, which in turn trap heat in our atmosphere.
FUEL BURNING
Food production requires energy to run agricultural equipment or fishing boats, usually using fossil fuels. Livestock produce methane, a potent greenhouse gas. And emissions also come from food packaging and distribution.
FODD PRODUCTION
Most cars, trucks, boats and planes run on fossil fuels. This makes transportation one of the main sources of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide emissions.
TRANSPORT
- Carbon dioxide (CO2)
- Methane (CH4)
- Nitrous oxide (N2O)
- Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs)
- Perfluorocarbons (PFC)
- Sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆)
- Nitrogen trifluoride (NF₃)
SUBTANCES INVOLVED
They are the 7 greenhouse gases:
- Elevation of temperatures.
- More powerful storms.
- Increase in droughts.
- Rising ocean levels.
- Warming water.
- Disappearance of species.
- Food shortage.
- More health risks.
- Poverty and displacement.
- Melting of the poles.
CONSEQUENCES AND RELATED PROBLEMS
PREVENTIVE MEASURES
- Save energy
- Use public transport, bicycle, skate, rollerblades, walk...
- Reduce, reuse, repair and recycle.
- Throw away less food.
- Reduce emissions.
- Use electronic objects and low consumption light bulbs.
- Use renewable energy.
- Plant trees and reduce felling.
- Save water and energy.
- Reduce the use of plastic.
