PREHISTORY

PALEOLITHIC

This was the period between the appearance of the first human beings and the beginning of the sedentary tribes. CHARACTERISTICS

  • The first humans were nomads, this means they lived constantly on the move for hunting and collecting fruits they found on their way.
  • They hunted to eat so they used the skin of animals to dress and developed simple weapons with stones and wood to help them with that.
  • They were living in tribes (small groups) and found refuge in caves where they painted on the walls.
  • The most important discovery was fire.
They became more and more intelligent and decided to start developing their own plants and crops and domesticating animals, and that was the beggining of Neolithic.

neolithic

The period between the appearance of sedentary tribes and the beginning of metalurgy. CHARACTERISTICS

  • Since people cultivated the land (agriculture) and domesticated animals (farming), they stopped moving from one place to another and became sedentary, and that was the start of the first villages.
  • They lived in very fertile lands, near rivers to access water which was needed for animals and for watering their crops.
  • Apart from ceramic, the most important invention was the wheel, which help transporting things.
They started creating objects and weapons with metals, and that was the beggining of the next age.

metal ages

The period between the beginning of metallurgy and the invention of writing. It was called the metal age because the tools started to be more complex and created by processing metals. CHARACTERISTICS

  • People continued being sedentary and the villages grew turning into cities.
  • In order to use metals, they needed to put them into very high temperatures to create the perfect shape to make weapons and decorations, and this difficult process called metallurgy, could only be made by some people.
  • People then, started to trade (exchange of things) crafts, weapons, food and decorations, and that was the beggining of commerce.
  • We distinguish among three ages, depending on the metal that was mostly used (Copper, Bronze and Iron). Sometimes this age is also called Bronze Age.

The years varied depending on the location but even though the invention of writing determined the end of Prehistory, these ages still continued even after that event.
