Gwadelupa jest terytorium zamorskim Francji, leżącym w Ameryce Środkowej, w archipelagu Małych Antyli.Odleglość od Polski wynosi około 8 tys. km. Jest to region cechujący się tropiklanym klimatem i wulkanicznym krajobrazem.

Swoją nazwę Gwadelupa zawdzięcza Krzysztofowi Kolumbowi, który odkrył ją w 1493 roku podczas swojej drugiej podróży do nowego świata. W 1635 roku zdobyli ją francuscy piraci, a wkrótce wyspa stała się własnością Kompanii Zachodnioindyjskiej. W 1674 roku przeszła w ręce zarządu państwowego Francji.

Ludność

Liczba ludności wynosi około 400tyś. (w tym Mulaci (65%), Czarnoskórzy (27%) i Kreole (8%)). Przeciętnie jeden kilometr kwadratowy zamieszkuje około 250 osób, co stawia to państwo na 50 miejscu na świecie pod względem zagęszczenia ludności. Najbardziej popularną religią jest katolicyzm jednak wciąż na wyspach można znaleźć wyznawców kultu voodoo. Językiem urzędowym Gwadelupy jest język francuski. Duża część społeczeństwa posługuje się kreolską odmianą języka francuskiego.

Lewe „skrzydło motyla” to zupełnie odmienna część wyspy i nosi nazwę Basse-Terre. Dużo bardziej dzika, mniej turystyczna, z parkiem narodowym, dżunglą oraz plażami z czarnym piaskiem.

Wyspa dzieli się na dwa ''skrzydła motyla". Prawe skrzydło jest dużo bardziej turystyczne niż lewe i nosi nazwę Grande-Terre. Znajdują się na nim najbardziej turystyczne miasteczka jak i również plaże z lazurową wodą np. plażą Sainte Anne, czy plaża Caravelle.

Czy Gwadelupa jest bezpieczna?

Jednym z najważniejszych festiwali jest Carnaval de Guadeloupe, który składa się z licznych parad i występów. Odbywa się w ciągu dwóch miesięcy, od pierwszej niedzieli stycznia do Środy Popielcowej . Jako pierwszy ulicami przejedża król Vaval, który w ostatni dzień karnawału zostaje spalony.

Najwyższym wzniesieniem na obszarze Gwadelupy jest wulkan Soufriere, który ma wysokość 1467m n.p.m. Wulkan jest wciąż aktywny, a do ostatniej erupcji doszło tutaj w roku 1977. Nazwa wulkanu oznacza dosłownie “ujście siarki” z powodu silnego zapachu tego pierwiastka, który roznosi się w okolicy masywu.

Na Gwadelupie można znaleźć wiele gatunków zagrożonych zwierząt, takich jak białe pelikany, iguany i czarne kolibry.
