Volta a crociera
La pianta a croce latina di un edificio di culto si definisce a croce immissa quando il transetto si trova a circa 2/3 del corpo longitudinale.

La pianta a croce di un edificio di culto si definisce a croce greca quando l'edificio ha quattro bracci delle stesse dimensioni che si innestano al centro delle navate, secondo una consuetudine diffusa soprattutto nell'Oriente cristiano.

Navata trasversale che si interseca con il corpo longitudinale della chiesa, di cui ha la stessa altezza, dando all'edificio una forma di croce.
Transetto
Portico su pilastri o colonne antistante le basiliche. Durante i primi secoli del Cristianesimo, era destinato ad accogliere i penitenti e i catecumeni. Più precisamente si parla di esonartece quando il portico è all'esterno dell'edificio, di endonartece quando si trova all'interno.
Nartece
Si definisce volta un particolare tipo di superficie posta a copertura di uno spazio delimitato da muri o pilastri composta da un insieme di elementi che reagiscono ad un unico tipo di sollecitazione, e tale che la sezione in almeno una delle direzioni principali sia una linea curva. La volta è un elemento tridimensionale dato dallo sviluppo di una superficie nello spazio, più precisamente della traslazione o rotazione di una curva direttrice lungo una retta generatrice.

L'architrave o epìstilio rappresenta nell'architettura greca, l'elemento strutturale che collega orizzontalmente tra loro le varie colonne del tempio e serve da sostegno per l'intera trabeazione, sulla quale appoggiano a loro volta le travi del tetto. I vari blocchi monolitici che compongono l'architrave sono pertanto lunghi quanto la distanza fra gli assi di due colonne vicine.
Architrave
La trabeazione è l'insieme degli elementi strutturali e decorativi che si appoggiano sui capitelli. E' costituita a sua volta da tre elementi sovrapposti chiamati rispettivamente: architrave, fregio e cornice. Più generalmente, si definisce trabeazione l'insieme degli elementi orizzontali sostenuti da colonne, pilastri e piedritti.
