Definition

Industrial design refers to the creation of everyday objects, combining functional, aesthetic and technological aspects. It covers a wide range of products, from furniture and electronics to toys and clothing.

An example of intellectual property protection in industrial design is the design patent.A design patent protects the appearance of a product, including its shape, configuration, pattern, or ornamentation. To obtain a design patent, the product must be new, original and not be evident from existing designs

The Colombian office in charge of governing the register of industrial designs is the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce (SIC). SIC is responsible for examining applications for registration and granting design patents.

Registration process

The process of registering an industrial design in Colombia is carried out online through the SIC portal. The process steps are:

  • Create an account on the SIC portal
  • Fill out the registration form
  • Pay the registration fee
  • Upload the necessary documents and drawings
  • The SIC will examine the application and issue a resolution.
