One of the best example is the play of Shakespeare, "Romeo and Juliet", of 1597, even if it wasn't the reality of all at this time. It represent perfectly the feeling of love in the 1950's period.

The painting "Nameless and Friendless" of Emily Mary Osborn is a good example of how woman in Victorian society are considered. The fact that they are totally out of eveything because of their husband control, even if he gives to her a reassurance of not being alone.

To illustrate this idea, Chedel Pierre Quentin who was a french painter made a beautiful canva of this conception and of the play of Moliere. It was made in 1734.

"Unequal Marriage", Is an oil painting of 1862 made by Vasili Vladimirovits Pukirev. He wanted to represent his vision of arranged marriages in the society in which he lives at this time.

We can find many drawings or canvas that talk about interracial love, or about the LGBT community for example. But something that I found really great is some quotes about 'love for all'.

The music "A thousand miles" by Vanessa Carlton of 2009 is an example of what "long distance relationship" is and what is implies in our everyday life. How does we feel.

The arranged marriages and the fear of being alone

In the 19th century they were arranged marriage, where love is something strict. If you wanted to marry someone, this person should be on the same social class as you. Being a woman and being alone is also something really frowned upon. Especially in Victorian society.

Love for the money

In this period one thing really common is the love for the money. It can be understood because of the difference between men and women at this time. It’s something that could be seen in our society nowadays but it’s less common than in those years. We can continue to see in some part of the society the control of husband on their wife, because he gives her a statut and the security of not being alone.

The period of forced marriages

In this period and before they were something called “forced marriage”. People, especially girls, couldn't chose who they want to marry. It was most of the time for a political or social reason. It occured in many societies of the whole world and it was a conventional thing.

The real kind of love

It's approximatly in these years that love started to be a choice and not only something useful. People started dating, asking someone to go out on ball and later party. They fall in love.

Things are more simple than before, and even if in some part of high class they are still those problem of social class, more people in the world could just have the last word on their feelings.

Beneath the Balcony

"But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun. Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, Who is already sick and pale with grief, That thou her maid art far more fair than she: Be not her maid, since she is envious; Her vestal livery is but sick and green And none but fools do wear it; cast it off. It is my lady, O, it is my love! O, that she knew she were! She speaks yet she says nothing: what of that? Her eye discourses; I will answer it. I am too bold, 'tis not to me she speaks: Two of the fairest stars in all the heaven, Having some business, do entreat her eyes To twinkle in their spheres till they return. What if her eyes were there, they in her head? The brightness of her cheek would shame those stars, As daylight doth a lamp; her eyes in heaven Would through the airy region stream so bright That birds would sing and think it were not night. See, how she leans her cheek upon her hand! O, that I were a glove upon that hand, That I might touch that cheek!"

Love interracial

Finally we entered in an area were love between people from different color, country or by the way people of the same sex is something more "normal" than "strange". Populations accross the world are more open-minded about the signification of love in all it contexts, and people could finally be together with no judgement.

Quotes about love for all
  • "Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope" Maya Angelou
  • "This is not a true problem, since individuals marry, not races."Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr
  • "Love wins over judgement"Vicky Beeching
  • "It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences"Audre Lorde
Love online

Nowadays we are in a period of technological advances, which implies that all of our life, or a big part of it, is on the internet. This is why app dating are made with time, and why people started to date online and have sometimes long distance relationship. Meeting someone is not like as before, and it's the same for dating someone. Because of the evolution of our society.

And what about the future?

Maybe in some years the signification of love will have totally changed, because of the evolution of our world. Love like nowadays will become old, with old manners like for example the vision that we could have on love 80 years ago. And even for art that express love, they will be a difference between now and 80 years later.
