Polka is a lively couple dance with Polish origins. There are six different types of polkas: Slavic polkas (Polish, Slovenian), Germanic polkas (German, Czech- Bohemian), and southwestern polkas (Mexican and Papago-Pima). Instruments used in Polish polka include: clarinet, trumpet, trombone, tuba, accordion, violin, cimbalom, concertina, dulcimer, drums, The cimbalom is a unique instrument, like the piano, it has strings that are hit with mallets to create sound.

Moroccan Music

Moroccan folk music uses a variety of instruments with varying timbres, including the ghaita, mijiiwiz, ney, qarqaba, moroccan tam tam, bendir, tarija, rebab, derbouka, tar, and oud. Drumming is an important part of Moroccan music. The tar, zilli tar, and bendir are a few of the many percussive instruments that create the msuic's distinctive sound.

  • The Hardanger fiddle is like its counterparts the violin and American fiddle, but is played in a unique way.
  • Two strings are consistently played at the same time, causing it to sound somewhat organ-like.

Norwegian Folk Music

Norway is a country in northern Europe. There are several kinds of Norwegian folk music. The Sami people are indigenous to Norway and have a unique style of singing called "joik." The bukkehorn is an instrument from Norway that is made from a goat horn!

The Sound of the Amazon & Islands

Ecuador is a very diverse country, encompassing parts of the Amazon, the Andes mountains, and even the Galapagos Islands! The Shuar music comes from the people of the Amazon rainforest. The music is accompanied by a foot stepping dance. The rhythm stays very consistent and repetitive. Choreographies in the Galapagan dance also show the biodiversity on the island! The dance mimics the movement of the Albatross and other birds native to the islands.

Serbian Folk Music

The gusle and frula are two traditional instruments from Serbia. The gusle is a one-stringed string instrument and the frula a wind instrument like a wooden flute. Kolo is the national folklore dance of Serbia.

Vietnamese Folk Music

Quan ho is a type of folk song from Northern Vietnam. The songs are typically performed in groups and performers call each other by family names like first brother, first sister, second brother, etc. The style calls for unique costumes and sometimes have call and response between the brother and sister groups.

Regilaul (runic songs) are a traditional folk music genre of Estonia. Estonia is a country that lies between Sweden and Russia. Singing is very important in Balkan cultures.

Armenian Duduk Music

The duduk is a double reed pipe instrument made of apricot wood and is the national instrument of Armenia. Duduk is almost always accompanied by another duduk playing a drone pitch, using circular breathing to keep the pitch sustained. The duduk can have a very sad quality to its timbre and melodies.

The ancient Egyptian harp held significant importance. Musicians were regarded highly in Egyptian society. The harp was an important instrument. The earliest harp can be dated back to 2500 BC!

Folk music of Greece

Dimotiko Tragoudi is one of the traditional musics of Greece. These songs date back to the times of Ancient Greece. There are many different folk instruments from Ancient Greece including the lira and lauto (lutes), the tambouras and gaida (bagpipe), the zournas (shawm), the daouli (drum), the dachares (tambourine), the ziyia (paired groups) and the violi (violin). The kithara is another Greecian instrument.

Arabesque is one of the popular traditional music styles from Turkey. The music of Turkey was influenced over time by its European and middle eastern neighbors. The Sufi music of the Ottoman Empire is also another notable folk genre from Turkey. The ney flute is used to create unique timbres in the music.

Ancient Incan Music

The ancient Incan civilization lived in the area known today as Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. Harawi songs were played on the quena, or a flute. Harawi develops later into the mestizo genre of yaravi. In Andean tradition, a man would play these songs to express his love from afar.

Indonesian Gamelan

Gamelan refers to the gong-based percussive ensembles from Indonesia. Each gamelan consists of a unique set of instruments. There are three types of instruments used, including metallophones (melodic-tuned percussion), structural tuned percussion (kettle gongs struck with mallets), and rhythmic percussive instruments (membranophones).

Iceland's "Tyrkjaránid"

Iceland is a northern country in the ocean between Canada and Europe. Contrary to its name, it is more "green" than its neighboring country Greenland, which has more ice! The story of the folk song dates back to the Ottoman raids of 1627. Pirates came and captured over 500 people in Iceland to force into slavery. The music depicts the sad, anxious, and mysterious feelings of this time.
