Love in the End of the XX century
Progress in egalitarian relationship !
The end of the century is marked by sevreal engaged movents (such as feminism, human rights, same-sex relationship...) which impacted on love relationship. It permitted more equality beetwen the men and women, so they could have similar responsabilities, homosexual relationship were more and more democratised... It start to looks much as nowaday
Love in the begining of the XI ce
Love thanks to Internet
The major event that change a lot of perspectives on a lot of subject, love included, was the apparition and democratisation of Internet !! A new public tool which could play a major role in meeting someone or keep contact with loved one. A lot a of couple could now met thanks to it : 10% of heterosexual and 20% of homosxual couple
Romeo and Juliette, by William Shakespeare
The play written in 1597 by Shakespeare and set in the 1400/1500 tells the story of two young lovers, whom cannot be reunited because their respective family HATE eacheother (#ennemiestolovertrope). This sad story of impossible love reflect how marriage where arranged in this period
Love in the Middle Age
Courtly love and arranged marriage
Even if arranged marriages (by family for money blahblah) stilled a common practice in this time, the idea of romantic marriage began to spread. In this way the concept of courtly love started, and young lady could have a choice in devoted men to marry (but they couldn't totally decide who to marry, this was still remaining to the family's approval)
The kiss by Gustav Klimt
The famous painting by Klimt made in 1909 show a typical couple in love : a man, tanned skin and larges shoulders, kissing a girl, very pale, frail, kneeling in the arm of the one carrying her... The gold sheet around them show their love. They are a reflection of the ideal relationship of the time.
Lalaland, by Damien Chazelle
Lalaland's story could be set in the 40s/50s ( from its nostalgic LA atmosphere) and is about a couple -from its start to broke up-. In the film we can observe how independant each memebers of the couple are, showing how equality has taken a step in relationship. /SPOILERS!\ The bad ending when they end their relation because they want to pursue their own carrier also show how people started to consider ending a relation if it no longer work
Love nowaday
Love application
In 2012 is lauched Tinder, an application dedicated into meeting new people and match in order to find love. It marks the increasation of the couple whom met online, about 29% of heterosexual and 65 % of homosexal relationship. Meeting people has, with these news ways of communication, much more manner to find a partner
Love in Ancient Times
Arranged marriages
In this time young peoples were destinated to marriage in order to strengthened the family power, gain money or lands... These marriages were arranged by the family and the married didn't have the choice. And of course, OF COURSE, love wasn't a priority (so don't you expect to see romantic marriages, it was INEXISTANT) even if it said that love will eventually take hold of the bride and groom
no love, no happy marriages, only what's useful
The importance of being Earnest, by Oscar Wilde
This play written by Oscar Wilde in 1895, with its trope based on the marriage of two young man, show well how appearence were stricly ruled by the society in this time (characters are lying on their iddentities).
Love and the Victorian Era
Marriage of love !
The Victorian Era marks the begining of Romantic marriage, where love was more of a priority (happy happy). However (because it cannot be all joy, obviously), the social rules of Victorian were strict, and men and women sould act and appear in a way wich didn't allow equality : mens were expected virils, protective, educated, and womens should stay at home, submissive in order t "serve" their husbands. Marriage with people of the same gender was considered a crime (wich is absolutely NOT)
Love in pre-World War II
Love in privates circles
In this time the current way of meeting someone to love and marry was through family. Indeed it was this way younger were introduced to one another, and the fact they couldn't travel a lot was making any vision of distant love impossible (don't they dare even thinking of this !). Equallity wasn't a thing either, conception of love was a heterosexual relation were the men was supposed to be dominant over the woman :(However couples were made out of love, not for money anymore
(Oline love) by Conan Gray
Although the song is very short (only 37 secondes of his beautiful voice) it talk about being in a relation in distance , existing thanks to applications on Internet (as the line "-Yet we talk like we're living, -Only miles, only minutes from another" suggest it is the way they keep contact)
The Meeting of Anthony and Cleopatra
by Lawrence Alma- Tadema
The marriage Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, and Mark Anthony, Roman general, allowed their armed forces to unites. But it also created political tension, which later would leads to their death :(
